Germany Trip

I am a High school senior, 18 years old, in the US. I am considering taking a year off before college to see Europe, and experiance things that I have not had the oppertunity to experiance. I want to travel in a few countries in the EU (Germany, Netherlands, France, and passibly a few others). The plan is to stay in hostles and hopefully get a job to cover some food and lodging (I would of course be bringing enough money with me to fall back on if this does not work out, and would have enough for a return ticket in the event of trouble). What are my options? I would be willing to consider some form of work for under-the-table, cash pay, unclaimed, but would probably prefer a ligitimate job. What do I need?
