Get Married on a tourist visa, is it possible??

Post by laly20 » Tue May 20, 2014 11:37 pm

Hi, I am a settled person in Uk, my girlfriend lives in another city in Europe and she is coming here for holidays, she doesn't need to apply for a tourist visa, she normally gets 6 months tourist visa everytime she comes, this will be the third time.
My question is, once she is here on a tourist visa, are we allowed to get married here in UK?? we don't want to apply for a visa here, we just want to get married as it is easier here then in the country where she lives. If that is possible it would be great!!

Please your help will be much appreciated.

In short, no it's not possible I'm afraid. You need a fiancé visa in order to get married in the UK.

Are you 100% sure about that?
Someone mentioned in another topic that once you are here on a tourist visa and decide to get married they can not stop you.
Just wanted to confirm 100% that information.

It is true that if you have a change of heart - then in theory the immigration authorities cannot stop you - however, part of the new immigration bill (which, from what I can tell, hasn't yet been enacted) is to lengthen the notice period for marriage up to 28 days as standard and potentially up to 70 days if an immigration investigation is decided upon.

For someone on a tourist visa - that might end up cutting it fine to appear to be a 'change of heart'.
