Girlfriend Apply for Citizenship need some Advice

Post by afclegend81 » Thu Mar 04, 2010 6:06 pm

Hi all,

Quick Question, my girlfriend who is from brazil is planing applying for UK citizenship.
She has been in the UK since 2005, she was married in July 2007 and got her indefinite leave to remain visa in Septmber 2009, she is now separated due to him not being a nice guy shall we say. She wants to know is she ok to apply for citizenship?
Have tried contacting people on phones and emails but just get put a number that does not work.

Many thanks

She should be able to if she meets all the requirements that is.

As of WHEN, then you would have to provide more details about her case, e.g how long she has been in UK for 'lawfully'? Is she still married to the guy?

Wait a minute, how did she get ILR last September if she separated from her husband last July?

I wondered that too John. Also in order to apply for British Citizenship as a spouse of a British national, she would need to submit her husband's passport with the application...which I guess isn't likely to happen.

afclegend81, you really do not to post an answer to my question above.

Casa, she arrived in the UK in 2005, so sometime in 2010 will have been in the UK for 5 years. If making a Naturalisation application under section 6(1) then a 5-year qualifying period, and no need to supply anything from the husband.
