Grandson of Dutch National - Can he get Dutch Passport?

Post by hrak1978 » Sat Oct 18, 2025 9:37 pm

Hi all,

My dad passed away but he was really sick from the last one year. His grandson and grand daughter born abroad but can they apply for Dutch passport as when they were born there grand father was Dutch citizen. I got all the documents to prove that to show the relationship. I haven't searched anything yet but this place is an encyclopedia of knowledge if anyone can shed some light on it?

Much appreciated.

Many thanks.

What nationality was the father (or mother) if not Dutch?

@alterhase58

Much appreciated for the reply.

So here is the history

My dad (Got first Dutch Passport in 1989) myself and my 2 brothers were in Pakistan. Only I travelled to UK in 2004 and got EU Family permit through my father in 2011 and subsequently got British Citizen.

My brother's kids (grand kids of my dad) all born in Pakistan still residing in Pakistan.

This seems to suggest the grandchildren would need to have a Dutch parent (who was Dutch at the time the children were born) to qualify. If that is the case they were automatically Dutch at birth. Otherwise they could qualify via 5 years residency in the Netherlands.

The grandchildren's relationship to their Dutch grandfather only seems to be relevant if citizenship was passed from grandparent to parent before the grandchildren were born.

You may be aware, but usually the Dutch require renunciation of dual citizenship to take up Dutch nationality (there are various exceptions - being born a dual citizen seems to be one - but this is the usual situation.)
