GSM pre-lodgement query: Overseas Police Clearance

Since I have worked in USA for almost 3 years on valid H1-B, therefore, for GSM I need Criminal History Record Check from US. My record is quite clean and have never been committed any crime though, the process of getting clearance from FBI itself seems quite long especially when I am no longer in USA. Has anybody been through such case? What is usual response time from FBI? Is there any alternative?
