Guidance Needed: Name Spelling Discrepancy in British Citizenship Application

Post by SS_SS » Wed Dec 31, 2025 8:24 pm

Hi everyone,

I’ve applied for British Citizenship and have been asked by the Home Office to clarify a spelling discrepancy in my name at birth.

On the application form, my name at birth is listed as: [First name variant A] [Middle name] [Surname variant A]

On my marriage certificate, my name at birth appears as: [First name variant B] [Middle name] [Surname variant B]

The differences are minor (extra/missing letters), but the Home Office has asked me to confirm the correct spelling and provide any relevant supporting documents.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation?
What is usually the best way to respond—providing a written explanation, official documents (such as a birth certificate), or both?

Any guidance based on personal experience would be very helpful.

Thank you.

That’s a slightly different issue, as it relates to an official name change. In my case, the name itself has not changed—there is only a minor variation of a single letter, similar to Sarah vs Sara.

For example, my birth certificate shows the name “Sarah”, while my educational documents show “Sara”, which appears to be due to clerical errors over time.

I hope this clarifies the situation.
