Do I Have to Find a Job Relating to My Qualifications?

Post by Saru » Sun Oct 29, 2006 12:30 am

I will soon complete a BA(Hons) in PhotoMedia and Design Communication, my focus being on moving image ie; film making. As I understand it, my degree will allow me to apply for a H-1B visa. My question is can I apply for jobs where my degree is irrelevant, say as a bank teller for example, some small job to get myself set up in America? Finding jobs in media is hard enough, especially in Seattle I would imagine, Seattle being where I hope to move to as my girlfriend is there. So, having a degree, do I need to seek employment in the same area that I am qualified? Bit of a stupid question, I assume the answer is yes, but I haven't read anything that says as much.

Thanks for your help, it will relieve much sketching.

From what I understand it is indeed a requirement, although the relevance can be somewhat general. I knew a guy who had a law degree from Italy and was teaching Italian at a language school. Obviously someone had taken the view that in order to have a degree from an Italian university his Italian must be pretty good. You may want to ask on a specialised newsgroup, such as alt.visa.us or misc.immigration.usa.
