Help on applying for British Passport!

Post by hassan_18 » Sun Feb 15, 2009 4:39 pm

Hi there, i was hoping if anyone could help me as i am applying for a British passport.
The following applies to myself and the rights which i currently hold:

1-Indefinete leave to remain
2-Father holds British Citizenship and Passport, and did at the time of my birth, but i was born in Pakistan.
3-I have lived in the UK for over 10 years
4-I have not taken the Life in the UK test for naturalisation, but i was wondering if i still need to take this since my father already had British Citizenship at the time of my birth.

Please could some one tell me wether i still need to apply for naturalisation or do i just send the application for a British Passport enclosing documents that prove my fathers British Citizenship and his passport.

Thankyou any help will be appreciated :)

From past 2-3 years, one needs to appear and pass the Life in UK test before applying for ILR.
From your comment that you hold ILR, and you have not yet taken the test, indicates that you have had ILR for quite some time now.

How did your father get British citizenship?

i've had ILR since 1999 when it was granted to me. my father has had citizenship and british passport for over 35-40 years, since he imigrated from pakistan.
i hold a pakistani citizenship at the moment.
my age is 17 by the way.

thanks for your replies guys, if you could further answer my questions, it would be appreciated :)

You may need to discuss it with them to be clear of how your dad got his citizenship.

If your father obtained his citizenship through registration or naturalization you'd be a British citizen by descent and should only need to apply for a British passport.

It sounds as if your parents may have wanted you to retain your citizenship of Pakistan..hence the ILR? You'd have to choose between citizenship of the two.
Oh, the drama...!
