Help getting my Girlfriend to the US

Post by TheTwice » Sun Mar 09, 2008 5:56 pm

My girlfriend is from Costa Rica and I am a United States Citizen.
I'll spare how we met but we are in love and she is now in the United States on a Tourist Visa however we both want this to be a permenent thing. She has family in Orlando who are also Citizens however we are both in Boston. I have read through the official government website several times and have a couple forms printed out but I was wondering if anyone had any specific advice or knowledge about the situation.

If she's only your girlfriend you can't help her at all. Any plans to get married? What is your nationality?

You would need to get married as you can't sponsor girlfriends. If you're not ready, she can try coming to study (obviously very expensive) or a job. What family does she have in the US?

She has cousins and aunts and uncles in the US, but they are down in Florida.

So what do you want information and advice on? I still cannot tell and you're not giving anything away.

Basically I am curious as to the easiest way to either get her a permit to stay here permenently, or at least get a job so she can live with me legally. It says you need to have a job to get the work visa, but you need a work visa to get the job....it becomes very difficult and there is alot of red tape. Her family in Florida I am sure could sponsor her. I am willing to marry her but she thinks if I do it that its JUST to get her citizenship but its not. Iam just curious if you know the true best and fastest ways to get it done.

I dont see how the family in florida can sponsor. two so what if you marry her if it is just for citizenship. seems to be a pretty weak reason to not do it when it is not the reason anyway. for a work permit she needs a company to sponsor her. you dont tell us what her qualifications are but generally it is a long shot to get work sponsored visas anyway.

I wouldn't be so sure. If they are uncles and cousins they won't be able to sponsor her. Even if she had a brother or a sister there it would take ages. About her getting a work permit, it really depends on her qualifications and experience. It's not easy. The only easy way for her to become a legal resident is most likely through marriage.
