Help Understanding Home Office Request for Name Change Deed

Post by SS_SS » Wed Dec 31, 2025 7:46 pm

I received the following message from the Home Office regarding my British Citizenship application:

"Thank you for your application for British Citizenship. We need further information to enable us to consider your application. Please send all the documents listed below to nationalityfurtherinformationrequests@homeoffice.gov.uk
. If you do not send this information by 10/01/26, your application may be refused. Please include your name and our reference number in any correspondence to us.

Please provide your change of name deed."

My situation is that my name was legally changed in India before I arrived in the UK, following the recognised legal process in India. Therefore, I do not have a UK deed poll.

I’m unsure how to respond to this request. Does anyone have experience submitting Indian legal name change documents to the Home Office, and how best to explain that a UK deed poll isn’t available? Any guidance or sample responses would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance!

What was the outcome of the name change process? Did you receive any official document from the Indian government regarding your name change?

If so take this document if it's not in English get it officially translated and send it. If you really need and it is signed by government official you may be able to get apostille for it by my gut feeling is that you don't need it.

The outcome was the official publication of the corrected name through a Gazette notification. The Gazette notification document does not have any signature.

If that's the way a name change done in India then you need this gazette publication.

Can you get an official Indian document regarding the name change? Does the Indian government issue name change certificate or something similar?
