Holiday to France, but what about the return to UK ?

Hi all,

Hope this is in the right forum, if not, my most humble apologies.

My wife is non EU.
We both live and work in UK.
She has a 5 year UK residence vignette in her passport, which expires 2019.

If we decided on a European holiday together, would she need a visa to visit France (or any EU country)?

Assuming you're a UK national - in theory she doesn't need a visa as your right to free movement extends to her when she is travelling with you.

In practicality she does. Some border agents won't know the rules and I'll guarantee you that a good number of airline checkin agents really won't know the rules. So you're risking a fight at every travel point (and potentially being denied boarding to a plane) without one.

A Schengen visa for the spouse of a UK citizen is free and isn't difficult to obtain.
