How early can one extend a Tier 2 visa?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently on Tier 2 visa (General) with my job on shortage occupation list. My visa expires May 2020 but I need to extend my visa due to personal circumstances such as my dependents' need to renew their visa as they were given a shorter period than I as we didn't apply at the same time. My Questions are:

1a. How early can one extend a Tier 2 visa ?
1b. Can one be penalised for an early extension application?
2. What will my employer write as the start date on certificate of sponsorship?
3. Do I need IELTS in this application?

You need to check all this with your sponsor employer.
