How much in savings do I need to satisfy an ECO?

Post by Texan » Sat Oct 20, 2007 1:54 am

Here is my dilemma. I am moving to the UK with my wife and kids who are British nationals and I am applying for the settlement visa. My family are already in the UK and are waiting for me there. We will be staying at her mother's house unfortunately for a short while until I find a job and our own house. I cannot apply for jobs as companies won't even look at me until I have a visa. I have the money for the visa and the airfare there and a little saved up. Not much money as I am supporting my family in the UK as well as myself here in TX. I don't want to apply for the visa and be turned down because I don't have enough assets. I am looking for a rough estimate on the amount of money needed so I know when to apply.
Here is a little background about us; I was stationed in London in the US Navy. We met in May 2000 and were married in October 2001 at Westminster Council. We had our first child on Nov 8. We stayed in the UK until July 04. We have lived off and on together because of the visa situation with US immigration. Now we decided to end all of the frustration with the US and decided it would be best for us to live in the UK. Now, I am trying to get there in the quickest way possible. We have 3 children together, all born in London with UK birth certificates. I will not be able to afford a flat or ahouse straight away and will be living with her mother. Here is the kicker, Her house is owned by Southwark Council not because she a low income worker(She is a registered nurse) but, because she took in high-risk foster children(Autism, abuse). Would this be considered as recourse to public funds? My wife is not working currently as she is looking to go back to school so I would be the primary source of income. I do not have a lot of money in savings after the visa fee and the airfare to the UK. How much money is needed in savings to satisy the ECO? I have not been able to find this informaton anywhere. ANY help is appreciated
