WP -> HSMP -> ILR

Hi,

I've been living in the UK since Oct 2002, first on a WP and then (from Nov 2006) switched to HSMP. All this time, I've been with just one employer, but had a 4-month gap in employment in 2007 (during which I stayed in the country - I'm a scientist and there was just no research funding available for me so I was applying for grants).

Now I want to apply for the ILR. Do you think my case is straightforward enough to go in person? Should I expect much questioning on this 4-month gap?

I think you should apply by post with a detailed explanation about why you were out of employment for 4 months..You might be ok to apply in person but why risk losing the money(and time) when it could easily be done by post? Best of luck either way!

I personally don't see why it should be a problem if you apply in person, if you read the guidance relating to ILR for persons who have been on HSMP, you will see that it says you should provide proof of your economic activity for the duration of your time on HSMP. This in no way suggests that you had to be employed the entire time since on an HSMP visa you are allowed to be self employed, contractor, full time or permanent, it is perfectly normal to have gaps in your employment.

Just in case there happen to be an ex-HSMP holder who's had a 3+ month gap an employment and then applied for the ILR - please can you share your experience.
