Since you get you residency, have you work in the country before the economic recession? the recession started hitting jobs from half 2008 for your information, and I believed you got your residence 2005 or even earlier if it was old IBC,which would be around 2002/3.
Secondly, when you are out of the country, is your wife on any allowance? and if so are you also on any allowance? is she taking any allowance on your behalf? as I could not understand or see any reason why her own residency can be cancelled unless she was involved in anything that made your residency cancelled, and I see no reason for you informing welfare department of your travelling, they are not the Department of Justice unless the above scenarios happens. You are suppose to be here to assist your family, if you are unemployed and on the lookout for job or attending college to improve yourself in the country then it is another scenario as nobody can blame you for not working now at this particular moment because their is unavailability of jobs enough for the citizens / European citizens not to talk of non-European, as most non Europeans are full of prayer for the economy to improve at this material time for them to be able to have a job and contribute their quotas to the country.
If not of this applicable to your case then you have my only advice is talk to a Solicitor, if there is anything that can be done
