My ILR is due in Feb... Need advice!!

Post by Emma84 » Thu Sep 27, 2007 7:47 pm

I figured I'd look into how to do my ILR now so I know I've got everything right when I apply. I've had a look at the BIA (formerly the IND) and the Immigration Advisory Service and I'm still confused on several issues. I've been resident in the UK already for 4 years. I was on a student visa till Feb 2005, when I successfully applied for Definite Leave to Remain as an Umarried Partner for 2 years. That runs out in Feb 08. Which form do I need to fill out? And how much does it cost? (I saw two different fee charts on the BIA website and don't know which is correct).

I also saw some things about proving that I know English and the British-life test. Am I supposed to take that when applying for ILR?

I'm also seriously confused about ID cards. Is this for British citizens only, or am I supposed to have one of those when I apply?

Btw, I have loads of documents, bills, etc, that are addressed to my partner and me and addressed seperately, which are best to submit?

The form to apply for ILR as an unmarried partner is the same as for a spouse, SET(M). The fee is £750 if you apply by post or £950 if you apply in person at a PEO.

Yes, you do have to take the Life in the UK test before you make the application for ILR.

As far as I know, the ID card scheme hasn't started yet.

Documents can be addressed to you and your partner individually, they don't have to be joint documents. You want to make sure that you send in plenty of items addressed to each of you spanning the two year period and that they are to the same address. You can send in some joint, and some addressed individually, it doesn't really matter.

You can take the test anytime, the Life in the UK certificate has no expiry date.
