ILR 10 years long residence

Hello,
I have applied for ILR based on 10 year long residence over 8 months ago in July, just before my visa was due to expire over post.. they have sent me numerous emails from September to December saying that they are still processing my application. The last thing they sent me on December 20th saying that my application raises exceptionally complex issues and that they required further time. A week ago, my lawyer told me that we were going to get them back but nothing has come. I have read that some people have been waiting a year or more to get any news from the Home Office.. is this going to be the case?
