Immigration Advice

Post by Dharmil » Tue Jul 05, 2011 7:07 am

Hi guys,

I am an Indian citizen studying my Bachelors degree in Computer Science at a reputed university in USA. I wanted to move to UK after my degree so my plan was to get an internship here in US and move the UK branch once I complete my degree. Is this completely unheard of?

Assuming that happens how long does it take before I can get the ILR and the citizenship?

Thank you - these links are quite helpful. But can you answer my question of how long would it take to get the ILR

You cannot apply for settlement on a Tier 2 (Intra-Company Transfer) visa.

Okay so in that case I would have to show them this was a fresh job offer? (even though I might have worked for them before in US)

Possible - suggest that you read the guidance. There is currently a consultation out suggesting that settlement on Tier 2 gets limited, so this might not be the best route if you wish to come here and settle. (It's just a consultation, no rules yet)

While it is certainly a lot easier for me to work in US (I already have an internship this summer) I like the UK culture/work life more.

@vinny - Thank you for that link.
@mulderpf - Thank you! I will look into consulting someone.

Do you guys have any idea how much the backlog/processing time for Indian born citizen for UK citizenship? (Assuming I'm a skilled worker: software engineer)

Naturalisation applications in UK are processed within 6 months, and the processing time is not dependent on issues such as "nationality of the applicant".

Are you asking how long before you would qualify for British Citizenship if you application for a UK visa is successful? If so, it's currently 5 years to permanent residence and one year more to qualify for BC...so 6 years in total.
