U.S immigration enquiry - plea for help!

Hi guys, sorry if this sounds a bit waffley but I'm trying to make sense of it all.
My partner and I are looking to emigrate to the USA, having previously spent a lot of time there holidaying and working on the J1 visa while I was at university.
My partner is a senior IT developer educated to degree level and I am a qualified social worker educated to masters level.
Just wondering what is the best route for us really? We are thinking of trying to pursue the H1B visa route then trying to sort a more perm visa once there...or we qualify for EB-2 on the immigrant visa (or I do anyway).
Our main concern is finding employment beforehand, we're looking at New Jersey mainly but are open to other areas if employment arises.
How difficult is it to find employers who would be willing to take us on in our fields? Also, which might be the best route for us as it's got us really puzzled!

Have a look here. It's not going to be easy. Unless you are planning to work in academia or have a US master's degree, you need to find an employer who is willing to sponsor you for an H1B visa, subject to a strict quota limit. Then you will need to effectively enter a lottery in April next year. If successful, you will only be able to start work in October 2008. The difficult part will be finding an employer who is willing to pay for the application, and wait several months until they know whether you can start work or not. Unless you have exceptional skills, that's going to be very difficult.
