If you are on an Ancestry visa, you can extend it as many times as you wish, you are not obligated to apply for ILR.
However, bear in mind that if you do this rather than apply for ILR, you have an additional cost of £1000 per person (main applicant and each dependent) for the new NHS surcharge. So for a family of 4, as an example, it will be £4,000 on top of the visa extension fees.
The same would apply to any other possible route of visa you may qualify for, Tier 2 General for example the surcharge is also payable for each person applying and on top of that, the main applicant will be tied to one employer and you will lose the freedom you have now to change jobs.
