ESOL English test for SET (0)

Post by glosnat » Sat Sep 14, 2019 9:26 pm

Hi everyone,
Really need your help, sorry but couldn’t find a clear answer.
I’ve got the Cambridge English Entry Level Certificate in ESOL International (Entry3) (Business).Council of Europe Level B1. Passed it in Russia.
The Certificate has been issued by Cambridge English Language Assessment in 2014 without the expiration date.
Got an entrepreneur visa in 2014 by using this certificate. Renewed my visa in 2018 as well.
Planning to apply for ILR.
According to HO website “You can only use English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) qualifications if they’re on the list.”
It is not clear what does “qualifications” mean?!
The "Awarding body" in the list of the "Approved secure English language tests and test centres" is the same that gave me ESOL certificate (Cambridge English Language Assessment).
Does it mean that I can use my current ESOL certificate issue by Cambridge English Language Assessment for ILR?
Thank you.

Yes you should be able to.
• an ESOL certificate for a qualification issued in England or Wales that is listed
on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications, which includes speaking
and listening and is at ESOL entry level 3, level 1, level 2 or level 3
• an ESOL certificate issued in Scotland awarded by the Scottish Qualifications
Authority that includes speaking and listening and is at Scottish Credit and
Qualifications Framework level 4, 5 or 6

Zimba, thank you very much for your prompt respond.

My test is in the Listed Ofqual Register:
https://register.ofqual.gov.uk/Detail/I ... (Business)

However, I am concerned, that according to guidance you mentioned above my application in 2019 for ILR can be under this rule:
“Applications made on or after 12 November 2015 for naturalisation and on or after 19 November 2015 for settlement”
Which means:
“For naturalisation applications made on or after 12 November 2015 and settlement applications made on or after 19 November 2015, the only tests that are acceptable are qualifications covering speaking and listening at B1 or above from the Secure English Language Test (SELT) list in the Immigration Rules, Appendix O. No other tests are acceptable and the test must be taken at an approved test centre.”

In Appendix O I cannot find ESOL.

Does it look like your quote above can be applied for ILR application made before 19/11/2015 and not mine? Am I wrong?
Could you please share your thoughts?
Thanks again.

I think you are right. Appendix O does not mention ESOL anymore, so you cannot use an ESOL certificate. You need to sit a 15 min B1 SELT test instead

Thank you for your answer.
My wife passed IELTS Life Skills test (B1 speaking and listening) as a dependent.
Should I pass the same test or writing and reading additionally as well?
I am the main applicant and have entrepreneur Visa/BRP.
I couldn't find the clear answer.

ILR requires a SELT at B1 level (Speaking and listening). This is the skill level required form all ILR applicants

Thank you.
I saw it but from gov.uk FAQ it is not clear if I apply under entrepreneur route or settlement.
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... s-v2.0.pdf

Should I sit a test that just assesses my
speaking and listening abilities or the one
that assesses all four abilities?
You will need to take the test required for the
route you are applying under.
You will need to sit a test that assesses all four
abilities if you are applying in one of the
following routes:
 Tier 1 (Entrepreneur)
 Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur)
 Tier 2 (General)
 Tier 2 (Minister of Religion)
 Tier 4 (General)
You will need to sit a test that assesses just
your speaking and listening abilities if you are
applying in one of the following routes:
 Tier 2 (Sportsperson)
 Representative of an overseas business
 Partner
 Parent
 Settlement
 Citizenship

Don't want to make it complicated...but did you or anyone see any recent ILR successful cases with SET (O) Entrepreneur and SELT at B1 level (Speaking and listening)?

Thank you.

ALL ILR APPLICATIONS, REGARDLESS OF THE ROUTE have the same English language requirement. Initial entry/extension is different
