Indian Marriage Certificate with view on future Spouse Visa.

Hi All,

I was hoping someone could clarify something for me with meaningful information as I am a bit confused...

I am getting married on March 7th 2011 and to apply for my partners spouse visa in the future I'm sure I need proof of the marriage in the shape of a Marriage Certificate from India.

Now my question is that as we are both Hindus and will be getting married through the traditional Hindu ceremony, do we still have to serve the 30 days notice that a Civil Partnership requires? Or can we just go to the registration place with proof of the hindu ceremony and get it signed there and then? what is the actual process?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I am a british citizen and i got married in India last year, we had a religious ceremony and for the spouse application my solicitior advised us to register the marriage at the court.

The next working day after our marriage we went to Jalandhar Court and filled in an application for marriage certificate having our parents sign also where required and we also had provided proof of the religious ceremony with the sikh marriage certificate and photo's of our wedding. We received the legal document after a few days.

We submitted both marriage certificates in the application.

So you didn't have to give any 30-day notice period? I read this for Civil Marriage but I guess as we are having the Hindu ceremony, we can just go to the registry and get it done there.

Would wedding photos and wedding invitation count towards the proof?

By your reckoning, we should only need to go to the registry soon after the wedding right? Will the certificate have the date of the actual wedding or the application?

So do they (Officials) not come and do anything at the wedding itself?

And you mentioned "both marriage certificates"? Do they give one out only?

No, the 30 day rule didnt apply to us, your just going to be registering your marriage with the court.

Wedding photo's are enough just make sure they are of the actual ceremony. If you get your partner or someone u know in India to go to the local court and pick up an application form and start filling it in, she will have to fill her bit in and you will have to do your's. We had to get both set of parents to also sign the application form.

I would recommend you get the marriage register shortly after the wedding and on the certificate it will state the date of marriage and the date you registered it, both your names, photo of you both, your addresses (in india and uk), date of birth.

No the officials do not come to the wedding itself, you just provide proof.

When we had our sikh ceremony at the gurdwara we were issued with a sikh marriage certificate from priest and we submitted that at the court as proof of marriage.

When we submitted the spouse application we gave the sikh marriage certificate and the one from the court.

However, my hubby actually got an agent to sort everything out for us. The agent got the forms for us and we took them home n i filled out my set and hubby did his.
It just made the whole process so much easier as the agent knows what to do n we were new to all this.
