I applied online on 23/12 and send supporting documentation and the end of March. My progress bar is a tiny fraction from the end (if that makes sense?! ) and I have an estimated due date of 18/5.

I’m hoping that as I haven’t heard anything by now, all paperwork is in order and I’m nearing the end of a looonnng wait!
Hopefully your wait is going to be over soon! :D. Does it still say "processing application" or is something more like "printing the passport book"? Could you please post here once you get your passport, it'll greatly help with the estimation :).

I certainly will! :D
It still says ‘processing application’ which it has done for 4 weeks - although the bar has been moving steadily every few days. If it changes to another action, I’ll post back on here too.

My son did his application online in March and submitted his documentation the same day as me and his progress bar is about 2/3 along with an estimated due date of 19/5. So it’ll be interesting to see how realistic the estimated issue times actually are.

The dates are never reliable. They were not remotely near the actual timeframe even before the pandemic. You may get your passport 10 days before the estimated date. You may get it a month after the estimated date. Both happen a lot.

Keep an eye on the status of the application. Once it moves past the generic ‘processing application’ (which should really be called ‘waiting to be processed’!), the rest should just move steadily.

I applied on 06/05 and sent the documentation next day. My application change status to processing 2 days ago with due date to be on 02/06 I hope the tracking is right
Hello! Is your application a renewal or a first time application? I applied via paper application from Canada in March but online applications have now opened to Canadians. I’m conflicted over whether or not I should cancel my paper application and apply online as who knows when paper applications will be processed again!

If anyone could please provide some info on timelines if they’ve applied for a first- time passport that would be greatly appreciated. I really need this passport (like many others!) and just want to pick the quickest option!! Thanks so much everyone.

My son originally sent in a paper application (first time one) with supporting documents in January from the U.K. Everything was sent back in March informing him that Ireland now only accepts online applications and to reapply as a brand new applicant. I suspect you may well find yours is returned too having seen this message on the DofFA site:

“Passport Online is open to all applicants, including children, renewing their passports and those applying for their first passport who are resident in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Great Britain, Europe, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA. If you are resident in a country where Passport Online is not available, please contact your local Irish Embassy or Consulate.”

Hope that helps?

Thanks so much for the info! Canada isn't accepting paper applications submitted after May 5 but the Irish embassy here has told me to keep my paper application in the queue as I'm in the final stage. It's just frustrating not knowing how long that final stage could be as it could be months and months!

Hi FlyingMum,
Have you received your passport? or would you like to share here any update in this regard?

Just checked this morning.

Yesterday my status was still saying “processing application” but the progress bar was completely full - so I was feeling pretty optimistic.

This morning, the bar has gone BACK to around 3/4 full! No indication of why.

Estimated issue date was 18/5, and although I’m aware that’s only an approximation, it’s a bit of a frustration to apparently be set back.

I read on some other forums, people were receiving their passports around 15 days past the original estimate dates.

Does it still say 18/5 and "Processing application"?

Yes, it still says processing and estimated issue 18/5 :? . I was hoping it might have moved onto printing or checking - but not yet.

Nothing. :( The progress bar has moved fractionally but still ‘processing’ and estimated issue 18/5!

Like I said, just ignore the progress bar. It never ever worked for one day since the introduction of the online application... You can always track the actual progress by chatting to the passport staff during work hours on DFA website.

Thanks, that’s worth knowing. Luckily, I’m not in a rush, but it just shows how pointless the progress bar really is. The only use it’s been is that at least I know they’ve safely received my paperwork. :|

I will need a passport (either new or existing) by early July and for some reason I think I may not get it by that time. My estimated date shows 31st of May, I think I'll try to contact them via chat in the first week of June to see if there's any progress or if they somehow could "scan" my existing passport into system and return it.

I've read the whole thread here, which has a lot of valuable info regarding the process.

I wish they could give finer details regarding the backlog of applications, would be nice to know our "number" in the queue to be processed, if there's any! :)

If anyone knows are we still @ level 5 lockdown here in Ireland ? Some one told me the passport office will process 1st time passport application when lockdown will be at level 4 and in his opinion we are still in level 5 lockdown, a little confusion on this issue.

It's still 'Level 5' but the number itself is no longer making any sense now. The whole country is being reopened sector by sector. You could travel to other counties and non-essential shops are open, so similar to Level 3 in the original definition.

Nevertheless, passport services have been classified as an essential service so it has restarted since last month.

Just chat to them now. Their webchat services aren't that busy. They should absolutely be able to scan your passport and return it in a day or two. I think I wrote a letter & chatted to them online to request my passport back on Wednesday, and I got it back on Friday.

Had a chat with them just now and asked them if they could scan my documents and return them to me, they said the documents haven't been scanned yet and it might take a week or two for them to be scanned into system. They suggested me to contact them again later and ask for the original documents once they are scanned.

Has any one 1st time applicant got their passport recently applied in the start of May?
Or any update from passport office.

Applied in April. Showing expected date of may 27 but I think it will be June end or July beginning when it will be issued

Not sure how are they planning on "clearing the backlog" by the end of June (6-8 weeks) if no passports (seemingly) were issued for first time applicants since reopening. I'd expect them to at least process some of the applications and print some of the passports, unless they are "processing" all of them and then send to printing, which is very unlikely.

Checked in with chat reps just now - documents still not scanned :?

Same experience for me, on website it was saying 31st. Chat Rep said tracker should be ignored, why to have useless tracking
Asked about scanning yesterday as well, not scanned yet although they received Docs on 1st of July.
