Valiant – Received August 16th 2018 / Transferred to Adoption Route January 2020

Technically I wasn't transferred to the Adoption Route, but told that I never need have applied for FBR in the first place and had from the start been entitled to apply directly for a passport, which I have since done and received. I got my FBR application fee back, too, which was a nice touch.

Just in case it helps with timing estimates, the above information (that I could apply directly for a passport) was actually delivered by the FBR exec on 21/12/19.
I didn't really know what to write without delving into a long explanation that would not really suit the list format. What do you suggest?

Hi everyone -- My grandmother was born/lived in Ireland and myself and my siblings have just mailed our applications and docs to Dublin for citizenship (should arrive today). Leading up to to this moment has been an extremely difficult process. My Irish grandmother gave birth to my dad in NYC and placed him for adoption (she was unwed and you know the times). We found her via DNA testing 2 and a half years ago and discovered my dad is a citizen from birth and that we're eligible for citizenship. We had to petition the court in NY to get my dad's pre-adoption birth cert linking him to his Irish mother because they were sealed here- which took a very long time and a lot of money but we won and got it.

I have a few questions if there is anyone who can help:
1) Has anyone gone through the FBR process before who had a similar situation re. adoption? Wondering if there was any difference or a longer wait time because of it. Luckily we were able to get a certified copy of my grandmother's Irish passport, as well as her other required docs but curious to know if there is anything I should be aware of as they are reviewing (flagging I already spoke to FBR last year and they said we're eligible regardless of my dad being given up for adoption).

2) The current estimate says 9 to 12 months, wanted to see if that sounds right to folks who have gained their citizenship post-Brexit (e.g. is it even longer or shorter)?

3) Because of this long documentation process I went through, I am terrified our apps will get lost in the shuffle somewhere. Do they proactively send a confirmation email that the apps were received?

Thanks in advance for any insight.
I can answer 2) and 3)

2) It's hard to say exactly as it depends on volume of applications, but people applying in march 2019 are recieving their certificates now

3) You get email confirmation when you submit online, and then confirmation again when they recieve your paper application and documents. After that, you (apparently) don't hear anything until they process your application.

Oh, what you put was fine. I was just adding a bit of colour!
What people are really interested in I guess is how long it takes to get a result, not the minutiae. So I'd leave it as you had it.

I was in a similar situation, my mother was born in England to an Irish father and given up for adoption. I had both her birth certificate and her adoption certificate, in addition to everything else on the checklist. About 3 months after I sent everything off, I had an email from the DFA asking for the court order in order to link my mother's given first names to her father's surname (her adoption certificate obviously did contain her birth surname for privacy reasons). This turned into a drawn out process with an adoption agency and the courts, and this added significantly to my wait time. At that time (July 17 applicant) applications were taking about 6 months, but mine took 13. In the end I was unable to find the court order, but I was able to get some partial evidence, which took up the bulk of the delay. Once I supplied this to the DFA, they accepted it and things unblocked quickly and I had my FBR certificate in my hand in July 18. Other posters have also mentioned needing to provide adoption orders. Best really to see if DFA get back with any further document requests and be ready to respond if necessary. They were very good and allowed me as much time as I needed and I just kept them updated by email on what I was doing.

Thanks for the insight! I collected all these docs in advance (preadoption birth cert, court order, adoption papers, current birth cert etc) but took me over a year so they should have more than all the evidence they need. Luckily, it's my dad's mother who is the Irish citizen and her name was on the pre-adoption birth cert and had her maiden name. Father was empty and that would have prob been impossible to prove if he was the Irish citizen

Great - yes if you have provided the court order I can't see there's anything else (specific to the adoption) that you might be asked for. Good effort!

Wishing you well on your FBR journey. It is worth all the time, money and effort when you get the confirmation email!

Hi Tom_bcfc,

Is the congratulations email the one that confirms your certificate has been printed and is on its way to you? I know we have a 1-2 week difference with our timelines, so hoping I'll hear soon that the certificate is on its way. I confirmed my address on the 14th of January and the FBR let me know they would send a confirmation email once the certificate has been printed. I tried following up earlier this week, but no word yet.

Thanks heaps!

Hi CaitieElise

Yes that's the congrats email, id imagine you will receive yours on the 19th February fingers crossed! hopefully before. Each week I would call them up asking for tracking if I was you, email them for tracking too. as the day after I called I randomly got the email, so maybe that helps. they send an email with tracking which can be tracked on anpost website after about a day or so, then you will be able to track it with royal mail app when you type in the same tracking code once it has left Ireland.

Prob time to get the passport form witnessed now (that's , unless you do your application online and do a verification form instead), I got my local pharmacist to do mine for £20. ....

Funnily enough I just done my aunties passport renewal online and her passport took 2 weeks delivery to Liverpool. So id imagine applying for passport online would probably be quicker, and then sending relevant documents to Dublin..

As for the certificate, they have changed them, there is now a photo of yourself in the top left corner, they send a passport form attached along with all your certificates in a pouch and also all proof of address etc everything you sent them.

If you are applying for passport via post the application will take a week to show up on the tracker.

Was a good episode on iplayer called 'Birmingham Irish I am' aired 2 days ago which was a great way to celebrate my irish heritage.

will keep you updated

I just received the official congratulations email!

So timeline was;
Payment taken 12th March 2019
Email acknowledging receipt in Ireland 19th March 2019
Request for extra info, which I provided, leading to email telling me unofficially that application had been approved 13th Jan 2020, and warning of 6-10 weeks delay sending out FBR certificate, but...
...official congratulations email received 5th Feb 2020 saying certificate had been printed and posted.

Looking good for St Patrick's Day!

I'm getting worried and depressed I've not heard anything yet. I'm past the 10 month threshold and it looks like all the other March 2019 applicants have heard something. :(

Hi guys,
I am an Irish citizen by naturalization and my son was born in Sweden a few months ago. The police in Sweden have refused to sign the application for me and the medical doctor as well saying that they don't know me. Myself I don't have an address or residency in Sweden and my wife Non Eu but she has residency in Sweden.
So please to advise on what should I do in this case.

Possibly try the baby's doctor?
My husband used a doctor for his passport application, although he was charged a fee.

Incidentally, my boss was getting jealous because he thought we applied at the same time, but he just tracked down his email and realised he didn't get his application in until April. I persuaded him to ring up and he learned that the delay has extended again after March, so he now faces a month or two before they get to his application.
Hang in there everyone - the team are working through a mountain of paper

Midwife who gave birth or notary public. Been in same case and midwife didnt refuse Because she gave birth to my son. One important thing is to make sure ALL papers are signed by same person/entity.

This is based on mu experience and suggestion from FBR team.. feel free to call them to verify just in case

Hi Tom_bcfc,

Thanks so much - I just called them and they said my application is in the final stage of the printing process and that I should receive my certificate by the end of the month/early next month. I think I'll keep calling if I don't hear soon, as I emailed for a tracking code last week and didn't hear back.

Great, I've got the passport forms ready so hoping I can start that process soon. I'm in Australia so I imagine the processing times are a little longer - we have to apply through our local embassy rather than online.

Congrats again on your citizenship and thanks for your help and updates.

I also just received my congrats email! Here are my dates:

15/03/2019 - FBR sent with docs
20/03/2019 - Email from Dublin acknowledging receipt of docs
10/01/2020 - Confirmation of address email
06/02/2020 - Congratulations email, saying certificate has been printed and posted

Strongly debating whether to apply for the Irish passport now online or wait until I've actually received the certificate. Not sure if I can do it without the certificate anyway just yet.

You cannot. You have to send the original FBR certificate with your passport documentation. Just as with the FBR application, you can start the passpport application online (if you live in an eligible country). But you still have send documents by mail.

Well, I'm quickly coming up on the 1 year mark since my application was received in Dublin (sent from Toronto). I was emailed Feb 19, 2019 saying everything was recieved and nothing since. This is ridiculous how people from March 2019 are receiving theirs before mine. Maybe there is a bias against Canadians? Haha.

I was originally told Dec 2019 back in May 2019 from a phone call to Dublin. So who knows when I'll get mine.

I have a job offer march 25th from Germany and I need to prove my Irish citizenship showing I'm a EU citizen.

Side note, has anyone tries getting their FBR faster by trying to use FedEx or express shipping? Id rather not wait 1 month to receive my certificate. With FedEx it would take 5 days or so to Toronto..

New to the board. I am, like you, interested in obtaining Irish Citizenship. I have read the webpage on FBR on the DFA website, but i still have questions. other than calling the phone number on the page, is there another place one can get information? is there an FAQ, etc?

My confusion is this. My father was born in Northern Ireland and left there after WW2 and eventually became an American citizen. I was born after. If i apply for Irish citizenship am I able to do it thru my dad or do i have to go back to his parents, my grandparents. my dad and his parents were born in Northern Ireland.

appreciate thoughts and insight. i've read about the backlog and delays and was hoping to find some similar situations i could read up on before i begin the process.

thanks.

from the web site:

Eligibility

You are automatically an Irish citizen if one of your parents was an Irish citizen at the time of your birth, and was born on the island of Ireland. You don't need to apply to become an Irish citizen in this case.

If you were born outside of Ireland, you can become an Irish citizen if:

One of your grandparents was born in Ireland, or;
One of your parents was an Irish citizen at the time of your birth, even though they were not born in Ireland.
