Hello,

Congratulations. Can you advise of the new NYC passport process you are referring to.

Thanks.
Hi Shannon! All first time applicants can soon apply with their FBR certificate and other supporting documents online. So no more paper applications, but you will have to mail your original documents to Dublin again. I have heard that the online system is faster than the paper application system.

I’m UK based so did the online application back in September. Once my documents arrived back in Dublin I had my new passport in my hands within ten days. It was unbelievably quick. In fact, here’s my passport timeline.

Passport application submitted/posted: 18 September 2020
Passport supporting documents received: 22 September 2020
Passport Posted: 30 September 2020
Passport received: 5 October 2020

Hey -- So i ordered a birth certificate for my grandfather -- its from ireland, but just a scan of a handwritten document... scrolling through the history here it seems like maybe i need a 'long form' certificate... Is that true, or any tips?

The certificate i got and submitted looks like

The long/short form birth certificate is maybe just a UK issue.
At first I only had an original short form certificate from my birth. I requested a copy which was in long form (with parents details included)

There are two types of birth certificates in the UK:
-Short-form birth certificates, which contain only the child’s details (free of charge at birth)
-Long-form birth certificates , which include both the child’s and the parents’ details. (for a fee)

The Long-form certificate also shows the exact place of birth, the occupation of the father (and more recently the occupation of the mother), and the address of the person registering the birth.

Hey everyone, been following this for a while but first post...

Im a Sept 2019 applicant. I had an email on 17th Dec to confirm my address and the person told me it was nearly finished and that once posted to email them again and ill be given a tracking number. Obviously lockdown hit again and so i gave up on hearing anything until we got to some kind of "Level 3" lockdown status.

Totally out of the blue i had an email this week saying my certificate had been printed and posted back to me by registered post 😁😁

My question is how can i find out my tracking number? I emailed the person i was speaking to before Christmas and all im getting is an automated email back saying they are not in work due to lockdown. There is no phone contact, and the online webchat seems to be forever unavailable. I assume the cert will be sent with An Post and as its coming from Dublin i also assume it wont take more than a week to get to Cork 🤔 just want some kind of idea where in the post system it is so i can make sure someone is home to get it when it does get here!!!

Thanks 😊

Congrats! That's great news! I never received a tracking number. I got that email in December and received the certificate in Canada in March. At least it will be much quicker for you :)

I don’t think I got a tracking number for the FBR certificate. I did get a tracking number for the passport application though.

Thank you 😁 i thought my application was going to drag on well into this year so im delighted..and as soon as the passport office reopens i can finally get my Irish passport and ditch the UK one 😂

Lets just hope it gets here quick enough now id be worried all my documents will get lost..i have no faith in the post system especially during covid and things just magically vanish for weeks on end!

Hi everyone
I have a couple questions
  • Is it worth doing the online application now even though I can't send the supporting documents yet?
  • Anyone have any idea when we will be able to send the supporting documents?!
  • Do the proofs of address need to be within a certain recent timeframe?

1) I completed the online application back in February but still havent sent everything in. It doesn't really matter since even after filling in the application online they wont even begin processing anything until they receive the physical application. Totally up to you: doing it now will get something out of the way and complete, but it won't matter for final processing time.

2) Nobody knows :( . The website says to not send in supporting documentation but people on this forum are posting that processing is occurring so I'm tempted to send the physical application/supporting documents soon. But strictly speaking, the instructions right now are to not send in anything. And they haven't announced when those instructions will change.

3) I think proof of address is supposed to be your current proof of address, but now that you mention it it doesn't explicitly say that, it's just implied. Will current proof of address be difficult for you?

Came across this video from July 2020 advising re the Foreign Birth Registration process and produced by the Irish Consulate in San Francisco - looks very useful for new applicants.

Have not seen any new announcement of re-opening for FBR or Passport processing.

Still seems to be Passports processing will return at Level 4 and FBR at level 3 with the backlog to clear.
(Though they have modified the roadmap and it is still all provisional on
things going well)

They published a press release with some dates - but no specific details on FBR.

It said i was entered onto the register in mid December but obviously not sent out until now so there has to be people working behind the scenes somewhere! Im delighted its finally sorted after a year and a half. Now to wait for the passport office to get reopened so i can apply for my Irish passport 😁

Applied Aug 2020 and Documents were received by them also in Aug 2020. Brother and father have had their passports for a while now. I'm waiting on my fbr certificate. Spoke on the WebChat and they said that FBR staff will not be back in office for processing until level 3. Passport office is open though for those who have already got their FBR certificates. This is depressing as I'm expected to pay an extra 5 grand on tuition fees this year because of Brexit. Looks like I am dropping out.. haha.

Thanks hopefully you wont be too far behind! I dont understand why they cant just check the documents as soon as they get them and then send them straight back why on earth do they need to hold onto them for a year! Its very frustrating especially for people who need them for other things.

I have finally gotten my certificate!
My timeline looks like this:

My documents were received in Ireland: September 16 2019
Address confirmation email: December 14 2020
Date added to registry: December 15 2020
Certificate received: April 12 2021

Very pleasant surprise as I had not heard a peep since the confirmation email in December
