Hello all! Good news! I just submitted my online application for the passport through the online system. I believe today is the first day you can do so from the United States as a first time applicant. Didn't take very long, but will have to secure a witness to my application tomorrow. Best of luck to everyone and will update again once I've receive the passport with my final timeline :)

Some quotes from an article in 'Dublin Live' today:

"Taoiseach Micheal Martin has said that the new set of rules announced by the Government yesterday could be described as 'Level 3 plus'. "

“So that has meant some variation on strictly from going from Level 5 to 4 to 3. You could describe it maybe as a Level 3 plus and there are variations but the overall framework is very helpful to us in terms of making these decisions.”

Not sure if that means FBR and Passport processing will recommence ??

Hopefully soon though

Ireland is easing level 5 restrictions on 10th may but they never mentioned they are moving to level 3.

Just heard from someone on another site, who spoke to Immigration Service on phone, that FBR plans to start processing again in May. :D

I wonder if the majority of the Brexit related flood of apps are already submitted - perhaps with less demand, the wait times will reduce as they catch up?
I think now that the Brexit transition period is over I would expect another rush unfortunately. There are hundreds of thousands/millions of eligible people in the UK. Once people start experiencing the inconveniences of being outside the EU I’d expect a spike in applications then as well. But who knows, I could well be wrong.
Would highly doubt there would be "another rush" as most british people who are in fact eligible have already applied through 2016-2020, the application numbers are down since then, in reality 99% of brits are not entitled to claim irish citizenship or citizenship of any other country.

Only 1% of total british citizens also hold citizenship of other countries, its an immensely small figure. So they will have to suffer the inconveniences of not being in the EU, no irish parent or third gen grandparent, no irish passport, its that simple.

I have to say, the fact that the office is likely now closed again all the way until at least April is absolutely insane. I could understand the office being closed during the first lockdowns, when this situation was new and the whole world was caught by surprise and shut down, but they've now had a year to find a way to carry on service. Every other business has had to find ways to work from home, or make their workplaces safe. It is absolutely unacceptable to close such an important government service, which people like myself are depending on.
At this rate, I won't get my citizenship until 2022, when I'm intending to study abroad in September later this year, so I'll likely have to postpone that for a year.
Can I please point out that no one's FBR application is guaranteed to be successful and citizenship on the basis of irish grandparents is not an automatic right, hence why an application has to be made and proof needs to be submitted which in some cases is not deemed sufficient enough.

So let me get this straight you are depending on the fact that Ireland will grant you irish citizenship, despite the fact that no FBR application submitted is guaranteed and there is a possible chance for whatever reason the application could be rejected, thats your own fault you can't automatically expect that another country gives you citizenship so you can go and study !
On the DFA website in relation to Irish Foreign Birth Registration it states:

If you were born outside of Ireland, you can become an Irish citizen if:

One of your grandparents was born in Ireland, or;
One of your parents was an Irish citizen at the time of your birth, even though they were not born in Ireland.
In these cases, you can become an Irish citizen through Foreign Birth Registration.

So as long as people have collected and submitted all the required supporting documents I can’t see why their application would be rejected?
The person has to wait until the documents are checked, there are thousands, they just cant fast track someones and potentially delay another persons who applied earlier because she wants to use an irish passport as a badge of convenience !

It is particularly notable that, of the over 80,000 applications from Great Britain this year, almost half were from persons born in Ireland and another approximately 37% were from Irish citizens born abroad to an Irish-born parent,” he said

The grandparent route would only account for 12% of the total number of applicants, the rest of the 1% of applications being rejected write offs.

I read an article where it was estimated up to 6.7 million people in the UK could have a claim to an Irish passport. Much more than 1%.

Exactly never once in any of my previous posts did I mention about anyone’s application being fast tracked! Just that I found it crazy the Irish Foreign Birth Registration Offices have been closed and more or less unable to operate at all since Xmas last year up until May the 10th this year (or possibly even longer who knows?)

I mean, this has nothing to do with Ireland or the Irish government: at the end of the day human beings wish for their interactions with a bureaucracy, be it public or private, to be efficient. And I think it's quite reasonable for those same human beings to be annoyed when said bureaucracy isn't being efficient, or worse is being extremely inefficient with little communication and guidance. To say it's not reasonable is to deny fundamental human emotion.

To that end, I think it's pretty odd for some people in this thread to insinuate that those who are frustrated at the FBR office for halting all processing for 4+ months shouldn't be upset or annoyed. After all, COVID-19 has existed for well over a year now and plenty of other bureaucracies, public and private, have discovered ways to function. Nobody is even asking the FBR office to function at full capacity, but this ostensible halt to all processing is what humans fear the most of a bureaucracy: being lost in an abyss of inefficient administration with little hope of a resolution anytime soon.

And these frustrations don't even take into account that processing was already bordering on almost a year even prior to COVID-19.

It is not a contradiction for us all to be grateful to Ireland for having very generous nationality laws regarding citizenship by descent, while simultaneously being frustrated at the delayed processing. It is literally one of the most unifying and human experiences of all to have a frustrating interaction with an inefficient bureaucracy. I'd even venture to say that every human on earth has at some point experienced that.

Moving back to the specific topic, it appears that the Irish government is still figuring out what is and isnt going to be allowed so unfortunately it's all speculation as to when the FBR will resume processing. It looks like unfortunately we're all going to be waiting for a bit longer for guidance.

I must fully concur with this article. It is the deliberate lack of information which is so annoying.

I cannot think of any other situation in life where there is a complete and utter disregard of the public who have already paid good money for a service.

Having paid (I think) 278 euros over 18 months ago, I don't think it is unreasonable to AT LEAST have an idea where I am in the queue. Just a monthly updated note on the website saying which month they are currently dealing with (Covid notwithstanding), or when, even approximately, batches of numbered applications might reach the front of the processing queue would be so helpful.

It's hard to understand the complete refusal to provide any useful information to the public.

Finally, this statement from the dfa website needs critiquing:

At present, due to the complex nature of the Foreign Birth Registration it takes approximately 12 -18 months to process a completed Foreign Birth Registration application.

Checking the three generation family chain through officially issued registration statements. Come on!!

that’s the thing..the office is closed for the third time since last march and the 12-18 month estimate hasn’t been edited since this past december. i know we are all applying for a plethora of different reasons and i hope this happens a lot sooner for us than we anticipate. i am so grateful to this forum because it has provided me with more information than anywhere else. in retrospect, me thinking this would happen in a year feels laughable now. but two-three years? getting a passport, buying a home with my significant other, finding a new job, getting married and starting a family is all delayed until this office figures out a way to operate. i called the irish embassy recently in austin and the man i spoke with on the phone was so so apologetic. it felt so nice to speak with a human finally who could empathize with the situation but unfortunately, nothing can be done to fast track an application. pregnancy isn’t even guaranteed to speed things up anymore. covid is serious business and i truly hope they are able to create safe working conditions for the office soon because this backlog is going to be massive. (i could speak for hours about why 12-18 month timeline is crazy when we’ve done the gathering of documents-half of which being issued by their offices or the fact that we have provided a physical application as well as a digital application and that information is entered into the system upon arrival BUT i have really been trying to change my tune and be a bit more positive about it lately) :D

Went on Webchat with passport office and they state they have no plans as yet as staff to restart FBR on the 10th May even the their website states
Foreign Births Registration/Citizenship

The processing of Foreign Birth Registrations will resume at Level 3 of the National Framework for Living with COVID-19.

If you have an urgent query, such as you are an expectant parent, please contact us through the Passport Service webchat team.

This has been in place since December 24th 2020 she said that they are not working to levels as they seem to abandoned and they had not as staff received any news of restarting processing 😕

okay the Ireland Passport twitter has been very busy today. currently they are working through online passport applications followed by paper passport applications. they have given the go ahead for people to send in supporting documentation so judging by people getting through to web chat and the twitter feed, i think it is safe to say they are finally people in the office. they insist they will have the passport application backlog dealt with in 6-8 weeks (end of june). they also said that currently FBR applications are taking 18-24 months. if anyone wants to check the feed the handle is @PassportIRL. at least people will be walking by the desk with our paperwork now 😂

Took a look at the Twitter feed. Not encouraging that processing is starting anytime soon.

This was posted from the passport service team;

We hope to have an update on FBR later in the summer. At the moment, applications take 18-24 months

An update later in the Summer is as far as it goes?

Hi All

I've just received an email from the FBR team telling me my certificate has been printed and is in the post.

I'm based in the UK, my timeline has been:

FBR Registration and Supporting Documents Received email: 01/05/2019
Address check email: 07/12/2020
Certificate printed and posted email: 07/05/2021

I'll update once certificate received.

Not sure if this helps but I've been dealt with by Team 4 and then Team 8

Update

Received an e mail from Irish embassy in Turkey asking me to confirm my address in order for them to send it to Irish consulate Karachi.
When Irish consulate in Karachi will receive documents they will contact me for delivery.
I think their process has changed as when I previously applied for my daughter they sent everything to my home address in Pakistan by registered post.
Hopefully another 2 or 3 weeks before I will have all the documents here.
Wishing you best of Luck JGCLANCY

The post on the passport service twitter saying they'll have an update on FBR 'later in the summer' is a bit concerning considering it's not even Summer yet. Late Summer to me means the end of August. Surely they can't keep it closed for another 3/4 months only to be able to potentially give an 'update' on it? That would be getting into the region of a 2 1/2 year wait for people applying this year.

I can't recall anyone reporting a new FBR granted since before Christmas. They seem to be tidying up those in limbo granted FBR but without certificates. But no-one has reported any new processing of applications.

Passports were recently reclassified as and 'essential' service and so the twitter feed includes many promises of online passport applications being completed within 6-8 weeks. I wonder if the FBR teams are working on clearing that backlog??

FBR seems to have been kicked in to touch and the 'level 3' restart seems to have been discarded.
We are relying on rumour and speculation on what is happening and when new processing will restart.
While I am able to wait and have no crucial life events impacted, There are plenty who were planning on the basis of reasonable expectations. It now all seems quite vague and evasive when there are tens of thousands supposedly waiting.

It would be great if the communication was better and there was some pathway for those with a good reason to have their FBR processed more quickly.

Looks like you won the race..Congrats!

I have seen recently uploaded adverts from the Facebook & Twitter accounts from the Irish Citizeninfo pages advertising the FBR process & adverts from Irish solicitors xxxxxxxxxxxx advertising their expertise in Irish citizenship by decent. It seems strange that if the process has been paused why are they recently uploading these adverts this week? Hopefully they know something we don't.
