Thanks to all posting here over the last several years. Here are my dates and I have my first question for the group.

- Oct 24 2019 - email notification, FBR application received
- Jun 14 2021- email; confirmation of address request
- Jun 28 2021- Congrats. FBR Certificate will be sent post...signature required.

Question: What service will be used to post the certificate to the United States? United States Postal Service? I didn't receive a tracking number. Should I expect another email? I'll be traveling and don't want to miss delivery!

Thanks-

Tom in North Carolina
Congrats Tom!!

Hi all. I've been reading some posts and I'm wondering whether my documents have been received since I mailed them December 2019. January 7, 2020 I got this email: "Your application for Irish citizenship through entry on the Foreign Births Register has now been received."

Some people are describing an email confirming their documents were received, is this it? It's just an auto-email and I'm wondering if it could just be a confirmation that my online application and payment went through as there is nothing about my documents mentioned.

Thanks for any insight.

An update on my application process.

Sent via mail: 17/10/19
FBR Application received: 22/10/19
Email confirming address: 15/6/21
Added to FBR/Certificate sent: 28/6/21
Received FBR certificate: waiting

My application was processed by Team #5, my application had no hiccups and was straight forward.

Congrats to you both!

This is where things get a bit more stressful to me - documents were received on the 24th of October. Heard nothing yet. Guess luck is definitely a factor right now, with June '19 applicants somehow still waiting, so I shouldn't feel down just yet.

"Your application and supporting documentation for your application for Foreign Birth Registration has now been received. Applications can take up to 6 months to process and we will be in touch with you should we require any additional documentation or clarifications."

That would indicate a 21-month turnaround, however I imagine they will get through these at a faster rate when more staff are working on them. They are supposedly going to return when Ireland reaches Level 3.

So glad I’ve found this forum as I too am waiting to submit an application for my FBR citizenship, reading these stories makes me realise others are in the same boat.

It’s been a very frustrating wait for the last 7 months since the FBR office shut, I have now gathered all the required documentation and have been checking daily for updates but it’s the same old story every day, there’s just no word or timelines for when they plan to resume processing.

Whats even more annoying is that certified photocopies of the identity documents from my father I’ve been informed will only be valid for six months from the date of being issued, so unless FBR start resuming soon I will have to get them done again which isn’t easy as he doesn’t live near me. The passport office webchat are often pretty unhelpful and dismissive and there’s no other way of contacting the FBR team.

Part of me was tempted to send in the application and documents regardless, I don’t mind that there will be a queue but I’m also worried if I do that my documents will go astray as there will likely be no acknowledgement they have received my application, So I probably just wait until they open and are accepting applications.

Heya Bug! I sent my documents in via Recorded mail. They cannot just lose people's documents or take improper care of things sent. They do have people in Balbriggan processing applications however they are only processing them for expectant parents at present. I realise it is not the DFA's fault the Brext and / or COVID happened, however I find their attitude strangely abhorrent - in that they apparently deem it acceptable to provide virtually no update whatsoever in what is going on. They need to sort this out !

Another thing is, if certain docs only have a 6-month validity they would essentially be committing to themselves to processing all claims within 6 months from whenever they happen to reopen the offices again - and I doubt that will happen!

One thing I have come to realise is that there is nothing to gain from stressing out over FBR applications. I had recently got to the point of having panic attacks. I own property in European countries and feel like I have no right over it anymore. The whole thing is very daunting and, dare I say, haunting, however it is as it is, and it is similar for a great many people. I joined a really nice gym yesterday as I feel that at least this will help me to keep positive during this time when many areas of life are in suspension.

There was a previous query about this.

I had the exact same email as you, that my 'application has now been received' but no mention of documents. However, this email came an hour after I got confirmation from the Irish post service that my documents had been signed for, so I can only assume that is what the email refers to. I was also in contact with somebody on the FBR web chat last Summer for something else, and they didn't mention that my documents were still yet to be received when reviewing my application file, so I can only assume everything is in order.
I sent my documents in February 2020.

I think the wording of emails has changed several times throughout the last few years, I think they must just have changed it for some reason.

I've just submitted a list of questions to the DFA, including responses to the following:

The total number of Foreign Birth Register (FBR) applications currently waiting to be processed.

How many applications are currently being processed each day (as at end June 2021 - early July 2021)

How many staff members are currently processing FBR applications.

Why the processing of FBR applications has been deprioritised.

Why have DFA staff been redeployed away from processing FBR applications.

Why does the DFA consider it acceptable to not provide applicants with any word of an update on their application?

When does the DFA plan to resume the normal processing of FBA applications?

When the normal processing of FBA applications resumes, approximately how many applications would be processed each day?

Why is there currently no update online as to when normal FBR processing will resume?

Why is it apparently deemed acceptable to only expedite FBR applications for expectant parents?

Given that many people have continued attending their workplaces throughout the pandemic, why could DFA staff not do the same?

Without any tangible information how are FBR applicants supposed to have any confidence that their applications are or will eventually be processed?

Thanks for clearing this one up - I do wonder if they’re just asking people not to send stuff in as there’s such a huge backlog of cases to go through. I might just send it in, I don’t mind being at the back of the queue, as you say, documents will get received and dealt with eventually.

I too find it shocking - I realise covid has had a massive impact but I work in a public facing role in a specific government dept in uk and were still processing applications regardless. No excuse really, we’ve had to adapt accordingly to continue to offer a service to paying customers. No excuse really , there’s only so long you can blame Covid ...

Heya Bug,

I personally chose to send my docs in because I felt so useless with this great mountain of paperwork sitting on my piano, I felt like I was at least doing something if I sent it in. For anyone needing to send in copy ID for a living person I'd probably advise them to hold off. My family are all now deceased so nothing terribly much was going to change in respect of their ID / documents etc. I think they are sitting on a whole load of documents in Balbriggan. If they were to insist on the 6-month validity of any docs they would essentially be committing themselves to processing them within 6 months of receipt - which is so unlikely given the backlog, I would envisage they will have to be a little bit flexible on this requirement.

Yeah if you send it International Signed For mail - I got proof of signature - then you will be able to track the letter once it reaches Irleand. An Post have an online tracker. What happens is the DFA each morning sign one signature for all the Recorded Delivery letters and packages - so when you download the tracking you can see all the different tracking numbers for the recorded letters they received that day - including yours. Mine were signed for by "Mick" - whoever her is I don't know!

This doesn't make any sense at all. In the past when the average processing timeframe was between 6-18 months, I've not encountered any people who had to resubmit identity documents.

You might be thinking of a situation in which a document must be valid for at least six months from the time of application, i.e. an application is made in August of 2020, but your passport will expire in October of that same year. I could see that causing a potential issue if they reviewed the document after the expiry date.

No I know it doesn’t make any sense at all. I contacted the DFA passport webchat service a few months ago as I got certified copies of my old mans passport and driving licence which was done beginning of Feb. I had no idea when FBR processing was going to start up again and I asked them if the certified copies were still valid if I were to say, send them in September. Most of the time I got an unhelpful response but I was told by two people on the webchat that they consider it valid as long as it’s sent in within six months of being issued. But again considering they won’t even touch my application for 2 years by the time they get to mine, this doesn’t make any sense as it will be issued way after then. I think it’s rubbish as really, my old mans passport is well in date for a long time and his driving licence is as well so it shouldn’t make any difference when they get sent in. Course I wasn’t anticipating they’d still be shut by now...

I'm not quite sure how to interpret that point based on your other comments. I suppose there are two related issues. One is when the physical application is actually received by them. Some people have wondered whether submitting an application on-line and then sending in the printed application a long time afterwards would result in the application being rejected. I have heard some say they've been told within a few months of the e-application being submitted on-line is acceptable. That's likely not a serious issue for most people.

The other issue is when the certified/witnessed are issued. This could mean a couple things. A. If 'issued' means 'witnessed or certified', then that would mean the documents, e.g. a licence, would need to be witnessed within six months of the receipt of the application. Or B. Or 'issued' means' the document itself became valid within the last six months of the application, e.g. a licence is issued in January 2020 and the application was submitted in June, six months later. Or C. Or 'issued' means the document has at least six months validity from the time of application. So a passport expiring in March would not work if you were applying in January of the same year, etc. Or D. 'Issued' means that the application must be reviewed within six months of when the documents were witnessed or certified.

I seriously doubt that 'B' above is correct, as that would mean that virtually no one would ever get approved without submitting new documentation. And the same goes for 'D'. Even under the best of circumstances, the FBR would likely take at least 5-6 months anyway. In the case of either 'A' or 'C', however, you'd just need to submit the application within six months of the documents being witnessed and/or certified, and documents like passports would need to be valid for six months at the time of application. So I think one of those options--or perhaps both--is what they meant to say. Or the people in the webchat just have no idea what they're talking about. :)

I got this on 13th Dec 2019...Your application and supporting documentation for your application for Foreign Birth Registration has now been received. Applications can take up to 6 months to process and we will be in touch with you should we require any additional documentation or clarifications.

Did anyone get an email that didn't specify their documents were received like mine? I assumed this email meant they had gotten all my docs, but seeing that others' emails seem more specific I'm starting to worry this is just them acknowledging my online app/payment...

My payment confirmation email was separate (received 2.5 weeks earlier) and looked like this:

"Thank you for submitting your application. Your payment has been successful. Please note that this mail is the receipt for the payment of your application fee to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. You should retain this email as proof of payment."

I got this on 13th Dec 2019...Your application and supporting documentation for your application for Foreign Birth Registration has now been received. Applications can take up to 6 months to process and we will be in touch with you should we require any additional documentation or clarifications.

Looks like a few October 2019 applications are getting through now! Fingers crossed!
Did anyone get an email that didn't specify their documents were received like mine? I assumed this email meant they had gotten all my docs, but seeing that others' emails seem more specific I'm starting to worry this is just them acknowledging my online app/payment...

My email on 23/12/2019 simply said “Your application for Irish citizenship through entry on the Foreign Births Register has now been received.“ The emailed receipt of my fee came on 16/12/2019. So also hoping this meant my docs had been received.

My wife submitted her application on 1st November 2019, paid all the fees and subsequently has had it acknowledged that the application was received. Other emails have confirmed that it is being processed but that things were delayed due to COVID. It is now 20 months, so we hope this is being processed now and it is encouraging to see that some October 2019 applications are being processed?

The passport office webchat are often pretty unhelpful and dismissive and there’s no other way of contacting the FBR team."

There is an Irish Citizenship Assistance center near Philadelphia (https://www.icphila.org/), so I stopped by in July 2019 to ask similar questions before I applied. Their reply was that the documents had to be valid at the time of application, but the FBR office did not require that they still be valid at the time of processing (e.g. 1 year later).

Rather than wait for my US passport to be renewed to start the FBR process, they said I could use my valid passport even if would expire in 2 months. Similarly, my mother's driver license was valid in 2019 but she did not have a passport or expect to renew the license/ID when it expired (no longer travels or drives).

I believe other posters mentioned having their FBR approved even in cases where the Irish parent died before the application was finally processed. (I hope not to have to find out the answer to this issue.)
