You must return to your Local Garda and renew your GNIB card before travelling overseas if your nationality ceremony has not taken place before December.

You can either call or email them to get your GNIB card back. Don’t wait till it expires. Just explain to them this situation. They will send it back so that you can renew it. You can then take your card and your approval letter to GNIB office to get a temporary renewal. Normally a 3-month extension should be free.

That’s the exact reason that you need to renew your GNIB now.

If you don’t renew your card, even if you are granted the Irish citizenship before 12 Dec (which is unlikely to happen), you legally cannot travel back to Ireland if you use your Pakistan passport to enter Ireland, unless you can get either a dual citizenship stamp (Stamp 6) or an Irish passport after your naturalisation ceremony but before your sister’s wedding.

There’s also some complication with regards to using a non-EU passport and naturalisation certificate to board the plane. Almost all airlines can deny you from boarding as naturalisation certificate is not a recognised travel document.

Op can only get stamp 6 after the naturalisation ceremony. That is when he will be an Irish citizenship.

If he leaves the state before his ceremony, without residence permission, he will not be able to return to even undertake the ceremony.

@Obie : Sorry I'm not hijacking the topic, have question and will really appreciate your thoughts..my retention application is in process, wondering can I apply for Citizen application as my citizen application time is over due and retention application is still in process from last 13 months and now they send me Temp stamp 4 for next 4 months..

I saw the INIS site and I didn't find the answer, all what I saw if you are in state for number of days, with reckonable stamp you are eligible to apply citizen application..

I got approval letter, sent fees and GNIB card, can I travel without it?

Post by hakkom77 » Tue Oct 29, 2019 4:24 pm

I got my approval letter and was requested to farward the fees and GNIB card and pics back in May 2019, now waiting for ceremony invite and this happened and I'm stuck here without GNIB card if I want travel for holidays with kids and wife I contacted Inis regarding this matter and this was the replay :

Hi I'm writing to u in regard of application
1742184-CITZ-16 I have forwarded all the requested documents and the fees
plus my green card to ur office 5 weeks ago and since then I have recieved
no further correspondence regarding receipt of the fees and documentation
or a date for the naturalisation ceremony, I also want to know if it would
be possible for me to travel back home for 10days for midterm holiday since
I submitted my green card with the documents
They replied with:

As you have already submitted your original GNIB card to this office you
will need to contact your local Immigration Office or the Immigration
Officer at the airport from which you are travelling to determine whether
you will be able to travel without your GNIB card. You should stress that
you are scheduled to be called for a Citizenship Ceremony and that you were
required to submit your original GNIB card to this office for this purpose.

I applied for citizenship as well. They didn't ask my IRP card yet but I anticipated that would happen to me at some point. So I asked them what to do in case of this.

Short answer is: You can apply for re-entry visa if your IRP card is with the citizenship division.

Here are the responses I got from reentry visa office. I could get the full answer after sending two follow-up emails.

1st email response:
If you need to travel while your IRP card is with the Citizenship Section,
it is open to you to apply for a re-entry visa or request the return of
your Card.

2nd email response:
If, however, you have a permission stamp on your passport and no IRP card
(eg. you are awaiting the IRP card in the post and are unlikely to receive
it prior to travelling), then you will require a re-entry visa. Re-entry
Visa's no longer operate an appointment, or walk in service in our INIS
office. In the circumstances, you must down-load the application form for
Adult Stamp 6 on www.inis.gov.ie and submit your application by registered
post, to Re-entry Visa Section, INIS, 13-14 Burgh Quay, D2. The process
will take just a few days. If you wish to collect your documents after
processing, then please enclose a note to this effect with your
application.

3rd email response:
We will need to see your return flight tickets in order to decide on the
length of the re-entry visa. It will not be valid for the length of your
permission stamp.
