How general election will influence Citizenship application?

Post by Stanina » Mon Jan 20, 2020 9:17 am

With general election in April, how it will influence Minister Approvals in the latest stages of the Citizenship application.

I think now Minister can still approve till the April. After April we will need to wait for new cabinet to come or will approvals still be issued by old minister, till the new government take over?

What are you thoughts?

Yeah, was away for a week from Ireland, so it was news to me when back. Initial google search showed it as April.
Found some answers online in the meantime as well.

When is the general election happening?
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has announced the general election will be held on Saturday, February 8th. He met with President Michael D Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin on Tuesday, where the 32nd Dáil was dissolved. The new Dáil will meet for the first time on Thursday, February 20th.
Varadkar will remain Taoiseach and Simon Coveney Tánaiste, and all other ministers will stay on until the new Dáil is formed. TDs, however, are no longer TDs.

The Minister of Justice and Equality can continue to issue approvals until the new Dail is formed - usually a few days after the election.

He cannot continue to issue approvals after that (and by the look of the latest opinion poll, he is unlikely to remain as the minister.)

Invitations can be issued after that because it is the INIS department that issues the invitation, not the minister himself.

The ceremonies in March can proceed as is because it is the judge who will swear applicants in, not the minister himself.

Realistically (and logistically), all approvals will have been sent well before 8 Feb.
