PASSPORT RETURN: How long does it take for them to return your original passport after applying to the Irish passport? I will apply via naturalization and I need to send my original passport as well my birth certificate. Curious on how long I will (again!!) be without my documents

Hi everyone! First time finding this thread, as well as a first time passport applicant.

To anyone in the USA who's received their passport, do you know who ultimately fulfilled the delivery?

My dates for reference:

Online application received: 25/08/21
Supporting docs received, processing application: 07/09/21
Estimated issue date: 10/11/21
Passport printing: 20/11/21
Dispatched via An Post: 22/11/21

This would all be well and good, except for the fact that we're out of town this week (through next Saturday), and An Post tracking is saying delivered yesterday. I'd be very surprised if it was that quick, and our neighbors haven't seen anything - really hoping it didn't go astray!

Hi all, just wanted to know - will there be an update to the tracker once they receive the required application documents?

I'm just curious as I applied online on the 18th, sent the required documents on the 19th and received by the Passport office on the 22nd. To date, there have been no changes in the tracker, it only shows an estimated due date which is the same as the date when I check the status (i.e. est. issue date date when I checked today shows 29/11/2021).

Yes - took 8 days for me until tracker was updated with the proper estimated issue date

Online application received: 18/9/21
Supporting docs mailed from USA : 4/11/21 --was traveling so delay in getting it sent
Supporting docs received, processing application: 30/11/21 --took 3 weeks!
Estimated issue date: 02/03/22 ----3 months, eh?

Well, at least my documents arrived after being in postal limbo for 3 weeks .
Hopefully, the system will revise that March 2, 2022 issue date but oh well...I'll wait a week
and watch the progress bar .......patience like the FBR process LOL

good luck to all

For those that take any meaning from the "Status Bar", my due date was Dec 1, the bar went to 100% today, but still shows as processing application. So I don't think the status bar really means anything other than it's a timer that correlates to when your documents were received to when it's estimated. If they don't process by the due date then there is no way to know how far along your application is.

a lot of people have similar experience, the best way is to chat them up online or call them

I believe all this delays by the DFA coming out of dearly beloved mentality of Simon coveney who is inefficient in handling passport applications. I guess Helen Mcentee will do better. she is the best person as she modernizes INIS in handling naturalization. Simon is the worst minister to handle DFA

Just got back from 9-10 days away (left on Thanksgiving), and of course my passport was apparently delivered the day after we left. That said, we had around 5 neighbors watching out for an envelope from Ireland, and they saw nothing. Nothing is here.

On the contrary, all our regular USPS post and packages turned up, which they shouldn't have - we'd requested to hold all mail before leaving.

I would be extra furious at USPS, except I'm not 100% sure they're the ones responsible. If anyone could shed some insight there, I'd seriously appreciate it.

I believe I read somewhere that it has to be signed for. I suspect it may be sitting at your local post office?

Went to the post office first thing before getting home, because I assumed it might be being held with our regular mail, as officially requested before Thanksgiving.

Joke was on us - they held nothing. 95% of our letters ended up in a neighbor's box (she was furious, and I don't blame her), while our USPS packages were all delivered as usual. Except this one.

That's why I'm desperate to know who actually fulfills these shipments here in the US. My assumption would have been USPS, but it could very well be a courier service or something else entirely.

Next step is reaching out to the dreaded passport chat service, and I can already imagine how that's going to go. They'll likely say it's out of their hands and reach out to An Post (that's what their FAQ says), which is basically a dead end. They themselves probably have no clue what happens once a package leaves Ireland.

Also, as far as the signature requirement goes, I remember that being explicitly mentioned when my FBR certificate was shipped. Found it waiting by our front door.

So I'm not sure what's going on anymore (could be pandemic-related), but it seems like signature requests aren't really being honored here.

This is absolutely haunting me. Most important piece of mail of the year (arguably second most, but at least top 2), the culmination of 26+ months and hundreds of dollars, and at the final step things fall apart. :(

Since I can't edit my previous updates, here's one more post to conclude this rather unusual saga: USPS did have my passport.

Instead of keeping our mail at the post office per request, they delivered it tonight at around 7:40pm PST, along with half (?) of our letters from the last 9-10 days.

After all that, feeling particularly happy to be done with this process - best of luck to everyone waiting!

Anyone coming up on their "due date" or have gone past it? I'm at day 52 now, status bar went back from 100% on Dec 1st to 80% now, still processing application. I did get a hold of them via web chat but they could provide no information other than the application is going through entitlement checks and to keep checking the passport tracker. For those that are trying to get through via web chat, mine initially said 89 minute wait but it went pretty quick and was more like 25-30 minutes.

They got my documents on 6th October and estimated completion date is 9th December but the progress bar is staying at about 80% and has never been near 100%.
The status went from processing and verifying documents last week to now just 'processing' - I hope that means the verifying bit has been done. Maybe I'll get it done by Christmas. Will post any developments. Good luck to you.
