Irish & UK citizens/PR holders settling in other country

Post by mmssaa » Fri May 14, 2021 11:14 am

Hi there,

I have a few questions in relation to Irish & UK citizens/PR holders. Sorry for asking all questions on just one topic.

Question 1:
1.a) if an Irish citizen decides to go to the UK for work and settle permanently, is it possible for them to apply for UK citizenship "immediately"?
1.b) If the answer to the above question is NO, then after how many years can they apply?
1.c) Likewise if a British citizen decides to go to Ireland for work and settle permanently, is it possible for them to apply for Irish citizenship "immediately"?
1.d) If the answer to the above question is NO, then after how many years can they apply?

Question 2:
2.a) Can an Irish PR holder go & work in the UK without needing a sponsorship/visa?
2.b) Likewise, can a British ILR holder go & work in Ireland without needing a sponsorship/visa?

Many thanks in advance. Much appreciated.

1.a) if an Irish citizen decides to go to the UK for work and settle permanently, is it possible for them to apply for UK citizenship "immediately"?
No it is not. British citizenship requires 5 years residence!
1.b) If the answer to the above question is NO, then after how many years can they apply?
After 5 years.
1.c) Likewise if a British citizen decides to go to Ireland for work and settle permanently, is it possible for them to apply for Irish citizenship "immediately"?
No.
1.d) If the answer to the above question is NO, then after how many years can they apply?
Also 5 years.
2.a) Can an Irish PR holder go & work in the UK without needing a sponsorship/visa?
No. Only an Irish citizen can move to the UK and work freely. If a PR holder wants to move to the UK, they need a visa.
2.b) Likewise, can a British ILR holder go & work in Ireland without needing a sponsorship/visa?
The UK and Ireland have a specific agreement in place for Irish and British citizens
