Retiring to Ireland from South Africa

Post by dermotg » Fri Mar 06, 2020 4:22 pm

Hi

My wifes elderly mother and father are retired and looking at moving to Ireland from South Africa, and I was wondering what the process is like for this?

My wife has been here for 14 years or more and has Irish citizenship, and I am an Irish citizen. Her mother has a British passport, and I was wondering how that helps things?

Her mother - British passport - she can come here whenever she likes.

Her father - presumably South African passport. This is a bit trickier. He can come here on his own merit (Stamp 0) or by joining his spouse who has a British passport under the EU Treaty Rights.

If he wants to apply to live in Ireland on his own merit, he will need to prove that he has sufficient money to support himself. See details here:

The better option is to go down the EU Treaty Rights route. With UK leaving the EU, they will want to move here ASAP.
