Visiting Ireland with EU Spouse

Post by shpirtshqipe » Sat Mar 04, 2023 8:38 pm

Asking for a friend

He is married to a EU Citizen.
The EU citizen is resident in the UK.
The non-EU Citizen has no resident status in the UK.
They planned for a genuine visit to ireland for 2 weeks
He presented to the airline in Germany with his EU Spouse and had the marriage certificate but was told he required a visa to visit ireland

Can I check is this correct or should he have been allowed to board the flight? If Yes can anyone help with a link to an official document that confirms same please?

Thank you in advance

Yes a visa is required. Only those who have an EU country issued residence permit under EU Treaty Rights can travel without a visa. UK is not an EU country, and even if it is, he is not a resident in the UK so he wouldn’t have qualified anyway.

The above answer is absolutely correct, I would also add that some eu countries require to have the spouse together while traveling, some countries can omit if you are spouse of resident if EU citizen and travel alone, it is always better to have printed copies all of the legal answers on the hands, it is a pain to communicate with airline companies regarding traveling rules, staff might not be correct in consideration give you a way it not, try to be always calm and ready to provide all proofs
