Irish Visa for American Wife? Pls Help!

Post by kramer1 » Tue Aug 26, 2014 3:52 pm

Hi, I'm British and my wife is American. My wife is currently with me in the UK on a 6 month tourist visa. We want to move to ROI to work and live together. Do we need to apply for a visa before we travel to Ireland and If so can we apply for a visa in the UK. I know Americans don't need a visa to visit Ireland, but is it different as we intend to stay a lot longer than 90 days? Can we just arrive as tourist and find a place to live and apply for our PPS numbers? Hope someone can help, Thanks.

American citizens do not need visa to enter ireland. As a brit citizen u can exercise ur EU treaty rights in ireland. You wife don't need to apply for an entry clearance visa from UK. Just book ur flights and make sure u have ur marriage cert with u. On irish port just present ur marriage cert with ur and ur wife passport and ur wife will be given 90 days visa and within 90 days ur wife need to apply for a residence card on form EU1.

During this process as a brit citizen u should have a job to show that u r exercising ur treaty right. For more info u can see the below residence card application process:

I have another question. We intend to leave the UK with 2 months still left on my wifes UK tourist visa. Will we be able to re-enter the UK to visit family? When my wife entered the UK she said to customs that she wasn't going to visit any other countrys, so I believe the tourist visa was marked as single entry. I'm guessing this will make things more difficult. Thanks.

First thing first, there is no immigration desk when u traveling from Ireland to UK due to common travel area.

Next, in any case if there is immigration officer (just for argument sake) she can enter to UK without any issue as ur wife left UK in a good time before the expiry of her first pemission.

Next, if you want to avoid any hessel (Again just for argument sake) you can travel to UK and Ireland (back and forth) via belfast, (if you use George best city airport) you will not see any immigration officer at all.

LOL, I am giving you MILLION dollar advise :)

Good Luck
