JSA contribution based

Post by boloney » Mon Jul 04, 2011 6:57 pm

I worked on card from 06.2004 till 04.2007
then switched to self-employed and due to lack of work I`m unemployed second week now.
do I have any chance to get JSA contribution based?
if not what my chance get income based?
my wife is on SMP, unpaid now, we have 1 child.
if not what can I claim due to my unemployment?
I`m getting HB and ChTC
Both of us Polish national, without any immigration restrictions
hope someone can help.

This is not an immigration related question. However generally the national insurance contributions you make when you are self employee don't qualify you for contribution based jsa you may qualify for income based jsa.

See job seekers Allowance

what benefits am i entitled to

I did research myself but I can not find the answer about contributions I did pay 5 years ago when I was employed.
I'm immigrant so this is immigration related question :)
Thanks anyway :)

At present you are still entitled to housing & council tax benefit, child benefit and child tax credit. If you are in receipt of working tax credit then you should inform the Tax Credits office about the change in your circs. to avoid any possible overpayment.

Usually you qualify for contributory JSA if you have paid enough NI contribution particularly in last 3 tax years. If you haven't then you don't satisfy the NI condition and won't get any payments but you may still be asked, by the local jobcentre, to sign on every fortnight in order to get the NI credits (it's not an actual benefit payment).

If your wife is getting SMP (paid in actual) then you are not entitled to income based JSA, this is because your wife is getting more than your household applicable amount.

And if your wife's SMP has ended and both of you are not working then you can apply for income based JSA, which will also make you entitled to full Housing & council tax benefit.

I've given you the above advice with the understanding that you are not subject to any immigration control.

Good luck.

Adam
