Jury Duty

Post by vmulberry » Tue Sep 05, 2006 10:47 pm

I was a LPR of the USA for the majority of my life. I turned 1 in the states and can only remember life there. I'm now 26 and have been living in the UK for some time. I'm aware that my Permanent Residence has been lost because I have been away for over a year without good enough reason.

The thing is that my parents say I got a jury duty slip back home. We were wondering why they would still call me if I'm no longer considered a LPR? Also, do they expect me to go? I know if I had been at home (California) without ever losing the LPR then absolutely I would have to report for jury duty.

Do they not keep track of the fact that I have lost residency? Where do I stand with them if they are not able to allow me back through the borders, but can call me back for jury duty? I'm confused by this.

Non-citizens including those with a green card are not eligible for jury duty. You must be a citizen to vote, hold elected office and be on a jury.

People get random jury summons through automatic processes like driving licence renewal, loan applications, etc. It doesn't mean any more than that. All you just have to do is reply on the form saying that you're not a citizen...and moreover...don't live in California any longer, and they'll gladly leave you alone.

So relax...no biggie.

Thanks. Since the slip is at my folks house in California I will ask my dad to fill it out as it needs and return it.
