Name Change and Its Impact on ILR Application

Post by Mandy212214 » Tue Jan 21, 2025 1:54 am

In early 2021, I applied for a UK visa using my birth name. Midway through 2021, I legally changed my name through a solicitor and obtained a Deed Poll as evidence of this change. However, I have not yet updated my passport or visa to reflect my new name.

I intend to update both my passport and visa to display my current legal name. I would like to understand:
1. Will updating my passport and visa to my new legal name affect my ILR application?
2. Could this name change be perceived negatively in relation to the ‘good character’ requirement for ILR .

1. No. You will apply using your new name and provide the deed poll to prove you changed your name. I believe the form asks about this actually

2. What ??! Changing your name has no such consequences. This is perfectly legal and normal

I am concerned that not updating my passport to reflect my new name between 2021 and 2025 might be seen as dishonest.

You should have updated UKVI but this is not a big deal in my view unless it was done to deceive. There is also no such thing as ‘good character’ requirement for ILR

I would like to ask about applying for permanent residency in the UK.

If only the Chinese name has been changed and the English name remains the same, is it necessary to report the change?

Local name changed

My English name on my passport remains unchanged, but my Chinese name has been updated. Should I notify HMRC of this change? Additionally, when applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), could this name discrepancy with my visa cause any issues?

I already answered that this is not an issue. What does this got to do with HMRC ???
