Maiden name (partially) changed in non-UK passport: problem?

Post by redcouple » Mon Jun 24, 2019 9:48 am

My wife recently received IDL, and is in position to apply for naturalisation and UK passport. We have followed the discussions regarding the appearance of a maiden name, but have not seen an issue like ours arise.

She has an Israeli passport. After marriage in 2013, a page was added to the Israeli passport noting the name change, without other modification of the passport. This was sufficient for all immigration and travel purposes. In 2018, prior to completing the IDL, the Israeli passport was lost and a replacement was received from the Israeli office in London.

The replacement passport documents the name in an unusual way: Smith (Jones), where Smith is the new name and (Jones) is the maiden name. There is no indication that Jones is the maiden name. Our concern is that the UK PO will take Smith (Jones) as the name, and disqualify our application on that basis. We've never seen a name presented in a passport (or elsewhere) in this bracketed format. Can anyone shed some light, and especially advise on how UKPO might view this?

Sorry, not IDL (what's that?), should read ILR.
