Maintenance funds, joint account, can we apply less than 3m?

Post by JohnM » Sat Sep 24, 2011 4:29 pm

Hello

My wife will need to apply for visa soon which requires maintenance funds.

She did not have money on her account. I had money on my account all the time. We wonder, if we make joint account on my bank account on our both names, can we apply earlier than 3 months after we make it joint? Or they will check the date when we made it joint and count from this date?

Cheers :)

It does not have to be only her money held in her bank account or in a joint account. It can be your money held only in your bank account. Read the guidelines.

Oh, really, great! Thank you Lucapooka!

Is it this one:
http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/siteco ... olicy1.pdf

Page 16:

ii) Building society passbook. The building society passbook should clearly show:
• the name of the main applicant and/or the family member making the application, or (for children
only) the name of the other parent who is also legally present in the United Kingdom

Correct? So it means I don't need to worry, we can simply show my bank account on my singe name for both - me and my wife? (Provided we have money to cover both of us)

Unless you are making an application at the same time as your wife, there is no need for you to show a maintenance requirement for yourself. If it's only your wife who is applying for leave to enter (and if she is outside the UK that is highly likely) then the amount required is 533 (or 1600 if you have been in the UK for less than 12 months).

No, we apply at the same time. My wife is the main applicant, I'm her dependent. It looks like she will need to have money on her account for at least 3 months. It looks like dependent is allowed to use family member account but the main applicant has to show only her bank account and can not use other family member's account. Because what we have right now is that I held money on my account for a long time but she did not, so now we have to wait until she had her maintenance money on her bank account for 3 months.

So we thought, what if we make my account our joint account, do we still have to wait for 3 months since the date we made it joint or we may then apply earlier?

Yes, the main applicant can only use their own account or a joint account with their name; the dependant may use their own account, a joint account with their name, or the account of the main applicant.

Thank you. But I still wonder, if we make joint account now, can we apply earlier than 3 months or we have to wait for 3 months since we made it joint? Because I had money for ages but she did not. So account will show that money were there for 3 months. But will they check the date when we made it joint? :)

I don't know why this topic was moved to Post-Study category. Some other visas have maintenance funds requirements too. I think this topic is more appropriate to General area of this forum. I respect moderators authority, however, wanted to ask to move it back if it's possible.

Does anyone know answer to my question, please?

If you make a joint account now it will have to be a new account. As far as I know you can't make an existing individual account into a joint account. However, even if you could do this, the joint aspect of the account would only begin now and would not retroactively make the account a joint account nor the money held. You would still have to wait 3 months to acquire 3 statements with joint names.

Hi, if my husband is applying for Tier 1 PSW (main applicant) but the maintenance fund is in my savings account, would this be OK? We are husband and wife, can we show marriage certificate to prove our relation? Or it really has to be in the main applicant's name (the bank statement? Thanks.

The main applicant can provide maintenance for the dependant but the dependant can't provide maintenance for the main applicant. It's not clear from your post if he is attempting to show his maintenance for his application in your account, or if you want to use his account to show maintenance for your application. You can't do the former but you can do the latter.
