How long is tier 1 visa valid if someone is not able to visit UK. For example, I get tier 1 visa in January,2010. Is there any time limit that I should get job in UK or visit UK after I get the visa ?

I want to apply for HSMP wihtout going through consultant as they charge exorbitant fees. Just wanted to know, how tough or easy is it to apply for hSMP on own. I am new to this and I am sure this topic must have been discussed in this forum. Please provide me the link in that case.
