Mentioning previous name in COS

Hi

I am asking on behalf of my friend

My friend received COS not including his previous name under other name section

While enquiring with HR she advised it is recommended to mention only his current name which appears on his passport

But my friend mentioned his previous name in visa application

Shall anyone confirm whether it is mandatory to include his previous name in COS or not?
