Misspelt my name on wife's visa - problems at immigration?

Post by midlandsmike » Tue Sep 14, 2010 5:15 pm

Hi

my wife has just received her settlement visa. However she has noticed that they have misspelt my name. I won't give my exact name, but suppose my name was Michael Sealey, they have written my name as Michael Serry!

I do not know how they could have done this. However it has been done.

My question is, if she was to try to enter the UK with this mistake, do you think there would be a problem at immigration? She would have some documents of mine with my correct name on them, and presumably this isn't the first time this may have happened. So should we just risk it? Or will they prevent her from entering the country? How strict are they at the arrivals desk for non-EU citizens (she is Mexican).

I have of course emailed Worldbridge and visas4uk, and I am waiting their response. It is frustrating it is not possible to phone them.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

PS I spoke to someone at immigration and they said to get a letter from the British Consulate in Mexico explaining this. But the person who said this seemed unsure herself. When my wife spoke to the British consulate they said contact uk4visas.

midlandsmike, it is disappointing that the British embassy have made such an error, but I don't think it will cause a problem when passing through UK Immigration at the UK port of entry.

I say this because the visa is effectively in two places, in the passport and also in the UK immigration computer system. So from that computer system it will be obvious that the visa sticker in the passport is clearly wrong.

Once in the UK it will be possible to get the error corrected.

Thanks for your response.

It hadn't occurred to me that they will already have lots of information about us on the computer system.

Can you briefly state what information they have, I'm just worried that the information on the computer might also be incorrect.
