Move to France? German national + American Citizen

Hi everybody.

My husband in German, I am American. We have decided that we want to move to France (we're both finishing graduate school in the USA and have decided that we want to live in Paris, already having lived there together for a year). We don't have jobs there and will not be getting jobs before we arrive. We do have a significant amount of money in savings.

My question: how do we obtain health insurance? I assume that my husband should automatically qualify for it, but what about me, as an American married to an EU national? And what about working papers? Can somebody tell me the names of the documents (en francais) that I will need to obtain a work permit? Or is this automatic? I would like to know which bureaucratic hoops I have to jump through to obtain health care and the right to work there. Any help is appreciated.

What you will have to apply for once in France is a residence card, details here: http://vosdroits.service-public.fr/part ... 2653.xhtml . Health insurance should not be needed the first three months but workers will be insured automatically. You will need your marriage certificate, your passport, your husband's Personalausweis or passport.

Within 3 months of arriving your husband will need to be working, or looking for work, or studying or self sufficient.

As the previous reply indicated, you will need to apply for a Residence Card for the family member of an EU citizen.

Technically speaking, you can both work from the day you arrive in France. But you (non EU) may have to convince an employer that you can work by producing a Residence Card.
