moving back to ireland with canadian girlfriend

Post by xzodion » Wed Sep 08, 2010 8:05 am

Hi all. I was born in Ireland and moved to Canada when I was young. I hold a dual citizenship, Irish/Canadian. My common-law girlfriend and I want to move back to Ireland for a few years. Both for the life experiance and so I can re-connect with my family there.

My question is this, I can work because of my citizenship. But can my girlfriend work without a visa because of that or would she have to get a visa/work permit. And if so, which one would she be eligible for?

Thanks

Niall

Your Irish end of story, you can work. The more important question is, can you get work? Look around before committing long term

Re girlfriend, a bit tricky (as oppose to wife) for now that it. Probably won't have problems getting a visit visa. As for longer and entitlement to work, see a solicitor (this is were there is no civil partnership etc)

Have proof of money, insurance and relationship. You say common law girl friend, what do you mean by that? were do you keep your equity girlfriend? (only messing) no really, are you in a registered civil partnership or the like in Canada? that would help

See a solicitor

Isn't there a de-facto relationship visa? As you can tell, I'm no expert on the subject, might be worth looking in to though- I know a Canadian who was dating an Irish person who got one. More info about visa types can be found on the INIS website.

The defacto route is the only way for you unless you get married.

You need to show 2 years proof of living together ie: joint bank account statements, PRTB registration, rent book, lease, bills.. all in both names. Photos and letter from friends and family can help too.

The following is the link to the Irish Immigration website regarding the above:

Note: Applications are at the discretion of the Minister for Justice and can take up to 12 months. Also if your partner has any negative immigration history (like overstaying a visa etc) this will definitely count against the application.

Thats all fine and well, but until the op explains that the relationship is more than mere g/f and more of a relationship similar to husband and wife, it aint much use. He has not any real business applying if he can't provide solid documented and dated evidence of 2-3 years relationship
