Moving to a different country a few years after naturalisation

Post by fooabs » Thu May 01, 2025 5:52 pm

Hello,

I was wondering, am I able to move to a different country several years after naturalisation (sec 6(1)) in the UK without losing British citizenship? I'm mostly concerned about the "future intentions requirement" because while I fully intended to remain in the UK long-term when I applied for naturalisation, I now want to move and live in a few other countries and try being a digital nomad.

My main worry is that I'll end up being in a similar situation as some other posters on this board who had HMPO question their naturalisation over them applying for passports abroad. My British passport should be good for another 7 years but I'll need to renew it eventually so I'm worried that they'll bring up my travel history at that point and make accusations based on that.

Is this a reasonable fear or am I worried over nothing? Should I maybe renew my passport earlier? I cannot exactly prove what the intention in my head was at the time of the application and my worry is that the HO will accuse me of not being honest about it in the future, even if I was entirely honest at the time of the application. The balance of probabilities standard does not seem to require them to prove very much at all.

The two topics in question that I've seen are these, although they both involved first-time passport applications from abroad a few months after naturalisation:

Thanks.

As you correctly identified, the only issues we encountered on the board were with first British passport applications. Plenty of British nationals (also who were British by birth) renew their passports abroad and it is not a problem. Renewing your second British passport abroad isn't grounds to remove your citizenship.
All advice comes from personal research and experience and should not be regarded as professional opinion.
