The biggest market for application packaging worldwide traditionally has been London.
Microsoft copied many ideas used in legacy automated deployment scripts used by many Banks packaging out of London into project Darwin that later on became msi technology. In the early days of msi technology, many American Banks were unable to find many packaging experts in US and shifted some packaging/QA work to London. Even today, many American firms rely on packaging SMEs in London to set standards/processes for them (what can one say about these Americans - they know how to invent new technologies, not how to best use them).
So the history of packaging in London goes back many years. As a result, there was a huge demand in London and the contract rates around 2-3 years ago had hit the roof (around 400 GBP/day or more). But, in recent times, most banks have already offshored their packaging work. Hence the demand in recent times has been quite less.
Unlike other parts of UK, London is slightly unfriendly and one comes across many (esp. packagers) with tons of attitude. Personally, I was not able to reflect with most of them who had no technical education and acted like packaging is rocket science that few have perfected.
Overall, a good market, but issues like attitude, cut-throat competition (almost everyone is doing it), etc. But, if one comes cheap, one is welcome anywhere !!!
