Multiple questions re Citizenship application

Post by Palmist » Sat May 30, 2026 6:34 am

Dear All,

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Status: ILR holder since 2014 and finally biting the bullet ant putting my citizenship application in.

1. I qualify on my own and also married to British citizen, there is no option to select route so I go with 5 year details or 3.

2. My current passport is valid from Nov 2021 and I am applying in June, it makes sense to send scanned copies of my previous passport to cover 5 year period?

3. There is a section in form for previous applications, I have had student and work permit visa extensions but I don't have any dates, I can add an approximate date, I also don't remember how many total applications I made. Will this be an issue?

4. I have had two speeding offences in last 5 years which I have added but I am sure I had one more about 10 years ago, I cannot find any dates for it, does it matter?

5. For documents, I have my P60s for last 5 years and Passport, do I need anything else?

Once again, many thanks in advance.

You apply on the basis of either 5 or 3 years. Caseworkers know the options. If you qualify for the 3 years (spouse of British citizen) apply with details for 3 years residency. If you go with 5 years it's 5 years' data.

2. My current passport is valid from Nov 2021 and I am applying in June, it makes sense to send scanned copies of my previous passport to cover 5 year period?
Provide passports covering the 5 years if more than one, yes.

3. There is a section in form for previous applications, I have had student and work permit visa extensions but I don't have any dates, I can add an approximate date, I also don't remember how many total applications I made. Will this be an issue?
Not an issue, provide as much data as you have or remember, you are free to attach a note explaining. It is not a statutory requirement and won't get you refused.

4. I have had two speeding offences in last 5 years which I have added but I am sure I had one more about 10 years ago, I cannot find any dates for it, does it matter?
No need to provide very old fines' details. Just the more recent ones. No issues unless you were taken to court, fined there, etc.

5. For documents, I have my P60s for last 5 years and Passport, do I need anything else?
P60s not required, for UK ILR holders passport(s) are sufficient.
Once again, many thanks in advance.
If you got more queries post in this thread. Note that naturalisation is not an immigration application, it has it's own law and requirements. Only a minimum of documents is required.

Another question, I am seeing six months as usual wait times, this is not an issue.

I am however planning to travel aboard (India), is there an allowed travel period on Indian passport once application has been processed.

Note you will only be British once you attended the ceremony in the UK. Until you are still on ILR. The email advising that your application has been approved is only advisory.

Last few questions.

I am at TLS document update stage and there are categories for documents, do I need to have documents for all categories?

And is passport's category "proof of residence"?

There is a category called "proof of application", what do I need to add here?

There is no category for "reference" ?

Thanks

Ignore the categories and load all documents to "Other".
The TLS system caters for many different applications - the categories have no bearing on your application. Case workers know what they are looking for and at.
