mum is born in canada, do i qualify for citizenship?

Post by jackallina » Thu Jun 11, 2009 1:54 am

hi! my mum was born and lived in canada until she was about 25...
she now lives here in australia with our family.
i want to apply for a acanadian passport and citizenship
but ive looked around on the CIC site and there is nooooo helpful information!!! the application form for citizenship is all about how long you have lived in canada etc.

i havent, mum is just born and grew up there, and her whoile family, my grandparents aunts uncles etc etc are all canadian citizenships, passport holders.

how do i apply for a passport under these circumstances?
(as for passport application it says citizenship must be current which i do not have - or do i apply with my mums citizenship?)

any and every apply is muchly appreciated
thankyou so much
x

You are a Canadian citizen by descent.

You just need a citizenship card to prove it.

Make sure you understand that you can't automatically pass on your status:

Is your mother also an Australian citizen?

ohh thankyou sooo much that is so much help
well i am only 18, so passing on etc doesnt exactly apply to me (or does it?)
haha

so basically i just have to apply for the proof of citizenship? - using my mums birth certificate? and then apply for the passport once i receive the citizenship report?

yep! mum is also an australian citizen.
does that change anything?
thankyou so much for your help! life saver haha

Not yet, usually. But you do need to keep it in mind.

If you have children born in Australia, you can sponsor them to migrate to Canada and if you do this, they can immediately be registered as Canadian citizens. Not many people know this.

Correct. And much better to do it now as you never know when you might need it in a hurry (eg job or study opportunity in Canada).

It's also simpler (in terms of paperwork) to visit the United States on a Canadian passport.

Changes nothing. Before 15 Feb 1977 she could have lost Canadian citizenship, but if she did lose it, she got it back on 17 April.

She should make sure to maintain valid Canadian and Australian passports at all time.
