EU national - Voting after becoming British

Post by kYuZz » Wed Sep 04, 2019 4:25 pm

Hi,

I'm an EU national and I've recently become a British citizen.

With general elections looming, I was wondering if I need to register again to vote?

As an EU citizen, I've always been allowed to vote for mayoral elections. Do I need to do something for being able to vote at a UK general election? or can I assume that my records will be automatically updated?

Thanks in advance

Contact your local authority electoral service department and request that your record is updated to show that you are British. Records are not updated automatically. You are then able to vote in all elections and referenda.

You need to re-register to vote, as advised by Alterhase58.

As it says on the website, "you must register again if you’ve changed address, name or nationality."

That assumption is incorrect. The responsibility is on you to update and maintain your records.
