You are lawfully residing in the UK if you have permission from the Home Office, via visas and ILR.

Thank you for your response. I am lawfully residing, and there is no continuous residence requirement. However, according to various AI research tools, it appears I would need to remain for 5 years, similar to the ILR requirement, in order to avoid the risk of my naturalisation application being refused, which means I still have to stay for two more years before applying for citizenshipalterhase58 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 16, 2025 5:43 pmalterhase58 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 16, 2025 5:39 pmYou are lawfully residing in the UK if you have immigration permission from the Home Office, via visas and ILR.

5 years from the beginning of the qualifying period to the date you apply, including one year on ILR. I would absolutely advise against following any AI generated advice on immigration/citizenship matters.RamyAbdallah wrote: ↑Sat Aug 16, 2025 6:12 pmThank you for your response. I was granted ILR after 3 years under the Global Talent route. From August 2016 to December 2021, I had spent 5 years in the UK, though I travelled to my home country for 4 months before applying for a new visa from abroad and returning in April 2022. I understand that this break reset my continuous residence from April 2022. However, from your explanation, it seems that naturalisation is based on lawful residence rather than continuous residence, unlike ILRalterhase58 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 16, 2025 6:26 pmI would avoid consulting AI on immigration & naturalisation topics. The outputs are not validated!
What is your immigration history?
For naturalisation you need ILR which normally takes 5 years to gain.
Once you have ILR there's a wait period of 12 months before applying, if you are not married to a British citizen, otherwise you could apply once you gained ILR.
